Honestly, I think it's more embarassing when you explain too much about your fandom and get a "uh...huh" or "..whatever" response. I try to keep my fandom talk IRL to a minimum, but sometimes it's hard when someone asks a question and you really want to respond, but you know the reply is gonna be something along the lines of "whatever, nerd".
