It is, however, possible to hate straight people, or any other majority group, with the same blindness as any -ism or -phobia, since it's possible to hate any group in such a way. I've always seen words like 'heterophobia' as trying to define that, though by the academic definition it's a clumsy attempt.

I agree that the issue OP calls heterophobia is closer to internalized misogyny on the fangirls' part, though, or sometimes a side effect of misogynistic canon.

I guess it's possible, but it's very, very unlikely. If you hated straight people the same way homophobes hate gay people, you'd be virtually unable to function in society. I would argue that it's a virtually nonexistent issue and that, in reality, it does not happen. It is likely that minor anti-straight sentiments are mistaken by homophobic researchers (whether outright or internalized homophobia here) to be indicative of "heterophobia"-type feelings in much the same way that research shows that women speaking 30% of the time in a discussion is seen as women "dominating" the discussion.

It is virtually nonexistent, of course it is, and I didn't mean to imply it wasn't. You make very good points; my only intended point in my comment was that unreasoning hatred can be focused at anyone or any group. I certainly didn't mean to suggest that such a hatred, if so unlikely it is basically nonexistent, needs to be something we want to address and fix. That would be ridiculous.
