[The Tempest]

I dunno, I read a draft of a book that (I hope) is coming out soon that made it super plausible. To me, anyway.

Would you mind explaining the book's premise?

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
This was like a year ago and I'm probably remembering it wrong, but the idea was they were pretty close and Prospero made Miranda break it off because he just couldn't accept the idea that Caliban could be anything other than a bad guy, because of his experiences with Sycorax. I don't think Miranda and Caliban were together romantically though, they were just good friends.

That's... not exactly what OP was talking about now that I think about it, huh.

I don't mind it if they were friends, and honestly, I think that would be an interesting dynamic, especially as Caliban later tries to rape Miranda.

It's when people claim that Miranda and Caliban were in a consensual relationship, tried to have sex, and Prospero caught them, leaving Miranda to claim attempted-rape, even though that wasn't the case, that pisses me off.

Yeah, because she totally was asking for it, and ~changed her mind~ when her father caught them. Right.

I could see friends, they were the only kids on that island. But yeah, I would be kinda upset too if these people were erasing Miranda's assault. I mean you could believe she was lying, but does that really bear out in the text? Especially since Shakespeare essentially presents her as The Prize.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
It really, really doesn't. Besides, she's held up (in text) as this wonderful perfect, as you said, "Prize", and that's important, as important as the fact that she asks her father to stop the storm at the beginning, and as important as the fact that she proposes to Ferdinand, and not the other way around. Changing that is bull.

Yeah, I always thought the whole 'Miranda was asking for it' idea was super sketchy and questionable. But tbh, I feel like there's a lot of sketchiness in The Tempest.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
OP here, it's not even the "Miranda was asking for it" people that annoy the hell out of me, but also the people who think Miranda and Caliban had a consensual relationship, and Prospero found out, so Miranda lied, and claimed that Caliban tried to rape her. I mean, really? That's just Bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's a bit iffy. I kind of imagined that neither of them really knew much about sex because I can't see Prospero giving Miranda "the talk" (the whole "OMG WTF IS THAT? IT'S SO PRETTY!!11" moment she has when she sees another man) and I don't think Caliban was ever told that it was inappropriate.
I guess I think they're the victims of being stuck with only each other and zero sex education. I don't think that makes Miranda less entitled to feel the way she does.

Unrelated, but I have so so so much love for Prospera in this version. She's so badass.
Prospera > Prospero. Sorry, Will.

[identity profile] dangerousdame.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Caliban is pitiable, but he did a terrible thing. There is nothing in the text that supports another conclusion- Caliban doesn't even deny attempting to rape her, and then offers her to his new masters as an incentive to kill Prospero! Hard to say that's just a misunderstanding.

[identity profile] nomorenoodles.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I remember in the play he admitted he wished he had made her pregnant so he could "people the island with Calibans" and overthrow Prospero. He didn't even try to deny he had done it. It's true he might not have known he was doing wrong, but he definitely had malicious intentions. Plus I'm sure Miranda would have struggled some rather than sat there and taken it.

I don't really remember the film version of the scene word-for-word, but I kind of imagined it would be the same thing?
