I agree with you OP.

But prepare yourself for the "OMG HUMANS ARE FUCKING GREAT HDU" crowd, because they are so damn touchy when it comes to pointing out what a shitty species the human race is.

And before any of that crowd start on me, yes, I know I'm human, I still think the world would be better off without us fucking it up left, right, and center.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
how would the world be better off? who would be left to benefit?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Animals and stuff I guess. That anon still didn't address the point the OP made though. Humans haven't done anything to "justify" being here but why should they. Nothing else justifies itself either. And if that anon thinks humans are the only destructive species on earth... lol.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
who would be left to benefit?

Everything that is not human. I thought that was self explanatory.

[identity profile] mika-kun.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
And why is everyone not human more deserving of life?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Did I say they were?

[identity profile] mika-kun.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
No, but my question is one that needs to be asked given the rest of the thread.

[identity profile] fadeinthewash.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't that kind of implied when you support the idea that the rest of the world would be better off with all humans gone? If we're creating a hypothetical dichotomy for the sake of argument between "humans suck, world suffers" and "all humans die"...that does seem suggestive of other creatures being more entitled to life than humanity.

If we were discussing the inverse-- if somehow the total annihilation of everything else on the planet could save humanity (I don't know, maybe we have to escape the Earth and burn its planetary remains for spaceship fuel or something), there'd be no question, I think, of the underlying premise in that suggestion that humans deserved life more than all the doomed creatures.

[identity profile] natural-blue-26.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that would suck for every domesticated animal/one's in captivity that would be unable to survive on their own ALL OVER THE WORLD.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Nature would balance the books. Animals are more resilient than we like to give them credit for.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I saw one episode of that show, and it said most domesticated animals would wither starve or turn feral. Resilience doesn't mean much if you're locked in a house and can't get out.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Animals die all the time in nature, every day, everywhere. The great majority aren't weeping about that.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
well the last anon said animal resilience was underestimated in humans, and if they meant "starving to death" then I guess they were right.

Undoubtedly, but is your version of happily ever after really your neighbors pets eating yours, etc? It would take untold generations for things to reach a new world balance eventually, but it's rather inane IMO to think that a whole city's worth of cats and dogs alone who are forced to suddenly hunt wildlife around them due to lack of human provided food wouldn't ravage the eviroment of other animal life (potentially doing irreparable damage to other local species) wherever they are.

Also "love" how we've completely marginalized the huge amounts of research/training/work it takes to reintroduce animals back into their native environments currently after the animals have either been injured or raised in captivity by scientists/etc.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, there would be consequences, and some of them wouldn't be nice. Guess what, nature isn't nice, it isn't pretty, and it doesn't discriminate. However long it took, it would balance out.

Also "love" how we've completely marginalized the huge amounts of research/training/work it takes to reintroduce animals back into their native environments currently after the animals have either been injured or raised in captivity by scientists/etc.

Which wouldn't need to be done if humans didn't ruin their environments and stick them in cages in the first place.

[identity profile] natural-blue-26.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Which wouldn't need to be done if humans didn't ruin their environments and stick them in cages in the first place.

So by that logic we should only currently be helping animals affected directly by humans? Any animal injured or orphaned by either disease or, gee, another animal we should just leave to die? I'm sorry, but that's awful. Different species of animals have been known to take care of each other's young better than that.

Additionally the entire point of rehabilitating a sick/injured/orphaned animals to live on their own in nature without dependence on humans is being totally misunderstood here.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I love how you can talk about how nature isn't nice, isn't pretty and doesn't discriminate, but still have a problem with people being not nice, not pretty and not discriminating.

Nature isn't inherently superior.

pff, I know how awful the human species can be and I still think the secret is hilarious.

Shitty, better, fucking up what? How do you know your concept of an ideal world, is also the ideal concept for the other species on this planet? All matter is tending toward entropy, and there is no possible way any species could fuck that course of nature up.

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I still think the world would be better off without us fucking it up left, right, and center.

Maybe it'd just be better off without you.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

You're an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a "maybe" in there. Also the OP did in fact imply that they thought every single last person on earth deserved to die. That's pretty harsh and I don't think anyone's unjustified to be annoyed by that sentiment.
ext_74116: (Default)

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
What? So saying it'd be better off without one person is cruel and wrong, but saying it'd be better off without all the people is somehow ok because... what? Multiply it by enough and it's no longer wrong?

[identity profile] xerxes92.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
Anthropologically speaking, we are actually a pretty fucking cool species. Back when we were all hunter gatherers food was shared with everyone, regardless of who acquired the main source of food, as hunter gatherers we cared for one another, and had lots of sex and took care of everyone else's kids. The problem is agriculture came into the picture and fucked all that up. The problem isn't our species as much as it is our agriculture and the culture that results.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
As hunter gatherers we only shared with and took care of people within our in-group. We were all perfectly happy to murder people belonging to other groups.
