What causes you to read a secret as opposed to gloss over it, FS? I usually skip ones that aren't in my fandoms, unless they're really pretty/visually interesting. If they're not a series I know, or are just super ugly, I just keep scrolling.

Generally I skip if I don't know the fandom/it's hard to read/it hasn't generated a lot of comments... But inversely I've also found some interesting fandoms/etc by a really well done secret catching my eye.

I tend to read most secrets, even the hard to read ones. Occasionally if there's been like four/five anime/gaming secrets in a row (I have little to no interest in either of these things) then I will sometimes scroll past them until I get to something I've actually got some idea about.

Super ugly secrets actually make me stare at them for longer. It's like I'm just horribly fascinated and can't look away. The use of a wall of flourescent colour and/or comic sans and/or text over a similar coloured picture have the ability to grip me hardest.

I usually skip any secret that's related to video games or television shows (unless it's a show I like, but so far there haven't been many secrets about any of them), and sometimes I stop reading a secret because the font is giving me a headache.

(same anon as above) Oh yeah, and I almost always skip Buffy the Vampire Slayer secrets even though I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer, because I'm sick of all the wank in that fandom.

Yeah, I usually skip things that aren't related to my fandoms unless they're pretty and short.

I used to gloss over secrets that didn't relate to my favorite fandoms before I realized that other-fandom secrets could be interesting, too, as long as they weren't too series-specific.

I try to read all the secrets, though (or at least skim them), unless they're hard to decipher or tl;dr (about fandoms I'm not familiar with).

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I read them all unless the fandom is listed below and it's a fandom I'm not interested in. I have no idea why this is; if it says "Homestuck" (just as an example) I'll skip it, but if I see the art and recognize it as Homestuck, I'll read it.

/makes no sense

I'll skip over anything that sounds like it's about roleplaying, falling in love with a fandom friend, a diary entry and I can't tell what fandom this is or what it has to do with OP's melodrama, anything about Skins because the show sounds boring therefore the secret must be boring, anything about a canon I haven't finished but don't want to be spoiled by, k-pop or j-pop secrets because I'm a generalising fucker and assume the secret's all about cattiness in those fandoms, anything about creamed panties, general "i'd hit it"s because they're boring, obvious (or seemingly obvious) trolls, Code Geass, Vampire Diaries, the new Nikita show, tl;dr-looking secrets that seem vague and I can't tell the fandom, anything where the secret text doesn't pull me in right away, and the boring ones.

But the thing is that it's all arbitrary, and depending on my mood, the trajectory of light in my face, and the alignment of the fucking moon I don't necessarily adhere to it. Like today. Why did I read all the secrets??? I don't even know what Tripod is, and I'm already wishing the OP luck in getting over their crushes.

I usually skip fandoms I don't know unless something catches my eye or it's a really pretty looking secret.
Also, any secrets that use color labels instead of names or are unreadable.
And if I'm not in the right mood for them I'll sometimes skip wall-o-text secrets.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I read pretty much all secrets in my fandoms. If they're not in my fandoms, I usually skip when they have a combination of ugliness/unreadability and tl;dr. Also, if you're posting a tl;dr secret, you'd better have a larger, bolder caption to grab my attention and draw me in and use the tl;dr as an elaboration or explanation.

Also, putting in the title of your secret's fandom really helps. Because if I see a secret about a work I've heard of but don't recognize from the picture in the secret, I'm much more likely to stop and actually read it.

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I pretty much try to read all secrets because some of them can serve as pretty decent recommendations when I'm bored, but I gloss over pretty much anything that has to do with minor shipping complaints (ie. "no one else likes my ship and there's no fic" etc.), anything to do with crushing on/masturbating to an actor or character, and those "you're the ___ to my ___" secrets. They just don't interest me.

If a secret for an unfamiliar fandom catches my eye, I like to browse through some of the comments to see if there's any interesting discussion about it. But if the secret's all about sexual attraction and nothing about the characters themselves or the plot, then I still wouldn't have any idea if the series is worth watching/reading or not.

I usually end up skimming most secrets unless it's a fandom I'm in or I notice it has generated a lot of comments.

I read almost all of them! But I skip textbricks unless something catches my eye immediately, and people who use font/background colour combinations that are stupidly hard to read. (C.f. dark blue on black, light pink on white.) Like, 14 today? I'd totally've skipped that except it was a Buffy secret. Light green on complex yellow background, really? C'mon, people, show a little design sense, 'k?
