I've never gotten this viewpoint. It assumes that somehow the earth will get a nebulous concept of better when all science suggests that the earth will come to equilibrium whether life forms are here or not.

I'd say the problem is that it assumes there's a concept of "better" in the first place. For the environment humans and many other species need to survive? Sure. For the planet? NOTHING humans can do an harm the planet in any meaningful way. We can do the worst thing you can imagine, and the planet won't even feel it.

Yeah, that's exactly what I mean by nebulous, but far clearer. Even as an environment we need to survive, you need human determinations to decide whether maximizing survival of all species or letting one species maximize survival is "better."
