Thiiiiiiisssss! Seriously, it pisses me off so much when people go through the insane troll logic of "omg character A is so wonderful with character B therefore they need to fuck because otherwise the relationship has no validity!" It's just as bad as those people who say bullshit like making a relationship romantic "cheapens" or ruins the sanctity of a friendship.

I mean, I'll ship most things (slash or het) if there's half a reason for it, but if it's obviously canon that one side would in no way be interested in seeing the other person naked - I don't see why you can't just go "so, besties, then" and go on your merry way. Really, I've had friends that meant way more to me than some of my lovers.

Really? You get pissed off when people ship fictional characters just because they don't appear in canon?

Anon thinks you take fandom too seriously.

Um, that's not at all what I said. What I said was it pisses me off when people try to argue that if someone is a good friend to another person, they should have sex because that's the only thing that makes the relationship mean anything. There are PLENTY of legitimate reasons (chemistry, subtext, interpretation, compatibility, personality traits, the way they interact, theories about how they would work as a couple etc etc) why someone would ship non-canon couples.

Isn't that the setup behind a metric fuckton of slash pairings, though? Hey, they're besties, they can't just be besties though, they need to be romantically involved too! I only see the friend defense used for het ships.

Well, the difference is that in media, it's damn hard to find a close relationship between a male and female character that doesn't turn romantic. On the flip side, it's damn hard to find a close relationship between two characters of the same sex that does. The prevailing assumption is that if a male and female have any affection towards each other, they need to be romantically involved. Male/male or female/female relationships not only don't have that kind of assumption, the very idea that such a friendship could turn romantic is fanatically suppressed and erased. Slash fanfic is one of the few places where the idea isn't suppressed.

Yeah if your slash pairing is based on nothing but "hey they're bffs" it's probably not a very compelling one, but that's just not comparable in any way to the same thing happening in het pairings.
