I thought it was way overhyped too. Motion capture was sweet but the story I found embarrassingly clichéd. Robot with real emotions, who knew???

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was interesting from a standpoint of feminist criticism, myself. Didn't pay much attention to the actual graphics.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Could you expand on that? Because I was really creeped out by it. The fact that they had an innocent naked female, that they purposely mentioned she could be used as a sexbot or in any other way imagined, and then tore her apart as she fought and begged for her life....that was all really unsettling. I don't know. I feel like if they had chosen to make it a male it wouldn't have had quite the same tone. Still unsettling, but not the same degree or connotations.

As for OP, yeah, it was well done but way overhyped.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
The guy calling her "babe" bothered me more than the sexbot thing. Completely took me out of the story that someone who is supposed to be a professional scientist/engineer/whatever sounded like a douchey college frat boy.

Though I wish we had at least seen some male robots at the end...if only because it wouldn't seem like such a creep-tastic misogynistic world where only female robots are made to be perfect "babes" for their masters.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
This is waaaay late, but here (http://mutableman.tumblr.com/post/19085329720/dont-mind-me-just-gonna-talk-about-lady-robots-for) is a pretty good look at what's so feminist about Kara.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was completely uninteresting from a standpoint of feminist criticism. Bunch of rich white guys make a video about a rich white guy rescuing what is effectively a white woman from sexual torture. Now there's a story we didn't hear eleven trillion billion fucking times.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, no. I forgot. She was rescued from MURDER by being SOLD INTO SEXUAL TORTURE. Sorry guise, I fail it ;_;

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Can't say I ever got the vibe we were meant to feel she was rescued? It definitely didn't feel like a happy ending, at least.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't think it was so much interesting as it was a typical, played out, DID fantasy. Look at the guy. He's so good to her. He let her go. How generous.

Although I did go, "Of course. If there where was ever a future where we had human-like robot helpers, of course they'd start marketing them as submissive wife bots to straight dudes first. Of course." And it did make me wonder what the reception would have been if Kara was a Karl instead. It just reminds me so much of that one play testing thing Valve did for Left 4 Dead, where they found players were more likely to assist anyone playing Zoey firstly and promptly.

[identity profile] spectrumpheonix.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Mostly because it involved using a real person to create the movements of 'Kara' and not software, basically just taking the film technique and transfering it to games. Personally I liked the 'story'. Yes, it may have been done in various forms before but the whole 'being born' thing struck me at the time.

Hype is as hype always is.

[identity profile] cure-light.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I was misty eyed by the end. I always get excited about anything that can make me feel a lot of emotion in such a short amount of time.

[identity profile] inkedfeathers.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Same! I was in tears.

That's why I liked it. ... and I'm a sucker for androids/robots with human emotions, thanks to stuff like Astroboy.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. It reminds me of the Heavy Rain tech trailer they showed years ago, where apparently tons of people were wowed by the uncanny valley and the, "omg sooo goood acting check out the animated tear drops."

It's not supposed to be pre-rendered, but that's not something I particularly care about. It might be prettiest game to play, but if its story is as broken as Heavy Rain, I don't see how relevant it is to have top quality motion capture, voice acting, much less detailed facial movement. The whole "sentient robots!!? why would we research this? we must destroy it immediately!" concept is also overdone to me, and there's nothing particularly grabbing my attention with a trailer that's supposed to hype me up. There's a slew of film, and other media, to pick from if I want to be emotionally affected.

blah blah blah though. I'm not giving a shit about this game until it's playable and I have something sufficient to actually judge it on.

It's not a game, it's a tech demo

I liked the concept even though it was cliche, and I thought the motion capture was good even though it didn't blow me away(they're getting a bit better at not making CG eyes look so dead and lifeless now, though.)

It's just hype, soon people will be saying it was good instead of the "best thing ever!!"

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
It was the voice acting for me and the music and the graphics..It made me sad :(

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Me either. I mean it was a very nice little mini project but other than that I don't see what's so special about it.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
The trailer story was seriously ridiculous.

[identity profile] talis-art.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the part where she talked in different languages tho, that was pretty.

[identity profile] azure15.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
I loved it. I thought it was absolutely bloody stunning, from the concept, to the graphics themselves. It's fascinating to see how far we've come with technology, games today are almost a world away from ones released just five years ago, and they're evolving and changing all the time.

Kara was adorable, and I like that the 'guy' wasn't all stiff and formal; how many times have we heard that before? No, we got someone who was clearly a little more casual in his work, dropped a few affectionate terms here and there out of habit. Along with Kara, that's another character I'd love to see more of somehow, even if this was just a tech demo.

It might be overhyped, but it's still fascinating. I can't stand games like ME or Gears of War, but I can still be amazed at how brilliant the graphics are.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
...I'm boggled by the statement "games like ME or GoW". I mean, they're both graphics intensive, but they're kind of incredibly different games. It's like saying "I can't stand food like chocolate or lettuce..."

Excuse me for jumping on this detail, I just have FEELINGS about Mass Effect okay. Also you've got a P3P icon, and I'd say P3P has more in common with Mass Effect than GoW does and my brain is going "so why can't you stand it and why did you lump it in with GoW????"

What "affectionate terms" are you referring to? Because I didn't notice any at all.

I disagree, actually. I was blown away by it. Almost cried. But I know how it feels to be "meh" about something everyone else finds amazing. This will die down soon enough.

I admit the "robot with feelings" thing is overdone by now. It's just a trope that appeals to me personally.

Supposedly this has nothing to do with any games they are currently working on. So it's just a tech demo to show off graphics. I guess you can take comfort in that.
(Still, I hope they don't scrap the idea entirely.)

Thanks for posting this secret, I had never heard of the video before and was pleasantly, no awesomely, surprised while watching it.

I love this video. I love the tone, the acting, and the editing. It's just really well-made and it made me fall in love with and care about a character within minutes, and not just because she's a helpless android with feelings, but because Valorie Curry's acting and Kara's dialogue is just so different and fresh.

I loved how laidback the engineer was, it added realism for me because you have to realize this guy probably spends all day giving that exact same test to dozens of Kara's each day, so of course he's going to be a bit unprofessional and his implied chauvinism adds depth and character instead of a blank scientist character.

Plus, the engineer believes he is talking to what is the equivalent of a sophisticated tool, androids obviously aren't suppose to have free will and genuine emotions in the video's universe so I can excuse his condescending "babes" and "honeys".

They took a familiar concept and added a harsh blatancy to it that I've personally never seen before. They didn't shy away from the sexbot angle and the dark implications of artificial intelligence. I actually think the video was very self-aware of the trope and actually explored it very intensely and very interestingly.

I wish Kara had her own movie so we could watch her story ;__;
