Considering how dense the books are, I'm kind of surprised that anyone would consider the publication schedule "slow". Just contemplating the amount of writing, editing, reediting, rewriting, etc., makes me clutch my head in despair; I wouldn't want to take on that Herculean task.

[identity profile] i-paint-the-sky.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, the reason I get annoyed with this thing isn't because of how long it is between books, it's the fact that GRRM can't keep his mouth shut and was constantly promising that the book was "almost done," when clearly it wasn't since I'm pretty sure he first said that about DWD right after FFC came out and it took several years for it to actually appear. If he hadn't constantly been getting people's hopes up, only to dash then, then I don't think he would have received half of the backlash he did. So while I do agree with the overall "GRRM is not your bitch" argument, he has to take responsibility for creating some of the situation by making promises repeatedly that he couldn't keep.

[identity profile] i-paint-the-sky.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is of course why the OP mentioned he is a troll, I assume. The trolling is what puts me off.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, what?

That's disgusting. Man, I've seen some pretty shabby fan behaviour -- Gail Simone getting chased off scans_daily for example -- and this takes the cake.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah... speaking as someone who's gotten impatient with George, the people at Winter is Coming are a bunch of bottomfeeders.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
He looks really gross, negl.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
awww isn't that cute, it thinks it's edgy!

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, how cute, you think you're cool.

People always say that fanfic writers shouldn't be held to ransom by their readers so I never get it when it's suddenly ok to threaten "professional" authors because they're not writing fast enough. Don't they have lives too? Ok they're getting paid for it but you still can't rush these things. I kinda get it, the frustration of waiting I mean. I only started ASOIAF last year and am half way through the fifth book so haven't had the epic wait yet but I know I'll get it while I wait for the next book. But seeing as the fourth book was so disappointing and the fifth is an improvement but not as good as the first three, I'd rather he take his time in hope that the next one is a return to form. Having said that people told me book five would be a struggle and I'm back to page turning quite quickly so it's not exactly terrible in my opinion.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well, and hell, you don't even pay for the next book UNTIL YOU BUY IT OFF THE SHELF. I don't get this attitude that "I'm GOING to buy their book sometime in the future when it's out and I bought their last one, so they owe me." Nope.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't people rather someone took longer and actually put out a better book than rushing through it just to give the people screaming at them to go faster a quick fix?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Not the same thing, but Stephen King rushed through the last three Dark Tower books because he was worried that the series would remain unfinished after he died. As such, the quality suffered.

So to George, I say take your time.

I think the problem with AFFC and ADWD was that it took him ages to write them, and they still felt like he had barely edited them, but just published a rough draft at some point. They don't read like he spent 6 years working on them to make them perfect, but like he procrastinated for five years and then scribbled something in the last year.

I do think there are a lot of entitlement issues in this fandom (cause yeah, we all want the books to come out soon BUT DAMN, SOME PEOPLE) buuuuut I cannot deny having gotten this feeling, kinda. All together that's like 2000 pages of noooot a whole lot of plot moving forward. In the end it was mostly pieces getting put into place, characters going through shit, but like...on the overall front........not all that much actually happened. AND THEN THE LAST 100 PAGES WERE A LOT OF CLIFFHANGERS WE'LL HAVE TO WAIT A BUNCH OF YEARS TO GET RESOLVED YAAAAY (including one that happened at the end of FfC and then that character showed up for like a second in DwD with ABSOLUTELY NO EXPLANATION. WOW.)

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
No, I think the problem with AFFC and ADWD is one GRRM has already admitted: he was originally not going to write them at all, and just timeskip those years. And - to me at least - it really, really shows. Here's hoping the last two, that he was always going to write even before it became such a phenomenon, will be much better.

[identity profile] lydzi.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I find people in general very disrespectful with GRRM in general. It's a fact. You shouldn't even have to make a secret about it because, seriously, it is known.

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
It is known.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-18 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
This fannish entitlement thing is a major problem in every fandom.

Seriously, how dare they attack a writer who gave them something that they love? How juvenile is that? Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-18 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
He didn't give them anything, he SOLD it. Like he tries to sell all sorts of junk through his blog. Trying to earn a few on water damaged crap says a lot about a person. That man is tacky as hell.

Yeah, I really, really hate this attitude and how widespread it is, especially among the ~BNFs. I used to be in the Hetalia fandom, and people slaughtered if you dared criticise the author and his update schedule (or lack of), or criticise him for drawing THIS irrelevent micronation instead of THAT major country. I consider the Hetalia fandom one of the cesspits of the internet so, it's kind of shocking to see this whinging and sense of entitlement not shut down in ASOIAF :/

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
The whole reason the books are so good is that he puts so much work into them. I would rather wait years for a good book than have the series degenerate into something crappy, or even mediocre. I can read other books - the world is full of books. I can't read a good ASOIaF book if he doesn't write it at his own pace, taking the time to polish and re-write as needed.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
oh man he is the biggest troll ever, but I don't think he's a bad person or anything. At one of his signing things (I wasn't there but I have read~) someone asked him why he decided to make Renly and Loras gay, and he said "because I noticed there were gay people in the world" or something very similar. And I thought that was pretty cool.

And I feel the iswintercoming frustration (I've been reading these books since only the first two were out) but shit man, what can I do. Harassing the motherfucker ain't cool.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2012-03-18 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I was just having this conversation with [livejournal.com profile] mutantjules (possibly in this comm...lol sorry)--on the one hand I'm like DUDE WILL YOU HURRY THE FUCK UP YOU'RE KILLING US HERE, but when I make myself think like a writer I realize I'd be having major anxiety myself if I was having a hard time finishing something that was eagerly anticipated by THAT many people (and something long and complex as balls at that). So I am trying to be nice here. (Although I will never like him much personally because of his comments about fanfic and about JKR. But I still respect/love the books and the personal attacks are going too far. I hate when people go to that place.)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-18 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I would rather wait for years for a good book then get a shitty one ASAP. Honestly, with most things I just wait for an official release date and ignore anything before that.
