I found Katniss very likable, but you're right -- if she is likable, she's likable in spite of herself.

(And confession time: I have not yet read books 2 and 3, and I hear the way her character develops is a controversial thing. So I don't know if I'd feel the same after reading them, because I haven't yet.)

Well, a lot of how I feel about her was because of the last two. I liked her immensely after THG, but my affection changed once I read CF and MJ. I empathized with her less(which is hilarious, considering the things she goes through), and I just really felt like her story, while human and relatable, made her unrelatable to me personally.

Actually, I think I like her MORE because of her many and varied character flaws, especially the ones that become apparent in the latter two books. This is for a couple of different reasons: one is because it's really, really refreshing to see a lead character (and particularly a female lead character) who isn't special, amazing, and perfect in every single way, apart from maybe having one flaw that ultimately makes her more endearing (i.e. "Oh, gosh, I'm just so ~adorably~ oblivious!"). These are real ad serious flaws, and were not exploited for maybe one chapter in the book before she went back to being perfect. These were significant and pervasive flaws that persisted throughout the series and caused her a lot of grief. Secondly, I find I relate a lot to Katniss because, though we don't have a similar personality, we have a lot of the same flaws: we are both extremely distrustful, and suspicious, and stubborn, and hotheaded. This, to me, makes her a thousand times more relatable than ANY character that I share good personality traits with. Thirdly, I liked that the author stayed consistent with these flaws and never tried to apologize for them. She accepted and did a good job of explaining that her character has flaws, just like any human, and does not try to diminish them or explain them away by making excuses for her behavior, like "YES, KATNISS IS MEAN, BUT IT'S ONLY BECAUSE SHE __________! IT'S NOT HER FAULT!". She placed the blame for Katniss' behavior squarely on Katniss, and I really like that.

Plus, it's very hard to write a character as unlikable as Katniss is and still have her be a loved and supported protagonist with a huge cult following, in my opinion.

THIS. Exactly. THIS is why I think the books were so good. This is what I think the focus was. All this. This is why I empathize with her. Yes, she was broken and had flaws, but at least she had them. Society is so obsessed with giving us one of two kinds of women; the objectified stereotype that needs men to rescue her, has no agency, and does nothing, OR the woman who takes no shit, is kickass on her own, and never ever shows weakness or admits to being wrong. Katniss is so different from either of those, because she's human and flawed. That will forever be the saving grace of the story, amidst the triangle shit, imho.

Even if, for personal reasons, I'm terrified of how similar we are because I'm terrified of undergoing a mental breakdown.
