Not everyone would consider making out with someone else one time to be cheating, actually. :P

Arthur exiling Gwen was not understandable. Not wanting to marry Gwen would been understandable. Stripping her of her home, her friends, her livelihood, and sending out to fend for herself in a society that had been shown in the past to be extremely dangerous to women (and srsly, she very nearly got raped a few episodes later - I am not making this shit up) was not understandble. That he lived in a society where it is apparently usual to execute for adultery (which was not the norm in medieval Britain, as far as I was able to ascertain) is not really an excuse.

I don't know anyone who would think their fiancee making out with someone the night before their wedding wouldn't be cheating. As far as "mistakes" go, that's a pretty shitty one to make.

Either way, it doesn't really matter what we consider to be cheating or not since, in that time, making out with another man the night before you're due to wed another would have been the equivalent of sleeping with someone these days. At least, that's the impression I've gleened from all the medieval-era stuff I've read over the years.

And yes, actually, it is understandable. For Arthur, who was born royalty and raised to be a King (which was the near equivalent of a god), it would have been completely out of character and generally nonsensical for him to give her a slap on the wrist and have her go her merry way. Gwen not only betrayed his trust, but she practically betrayed the crown. He could have easily had her executed-- which most people would have expected (hell, would have demanded if they'd known) but he did not. He made her leave his city which, yeah, was a pretty shitty thing to do, but not at all unexpected when considering his title and his personality.

Arthur is a complete anomaly. Most kings in that era would have been like Uther (were expected to be like Uther) and what do you think Uther would have done had it been him in Arthur's shoes? He would have probably had her executed on principal alone. Exile, which was generally perceived to be a "mercy" to those who went against the crown, would have been him being lenient.

I'm not denying that it was a crappy move for Gwen, but I also don't see how it's not so completely understandable for a King Arthur who hasn't quite yet reached his legendary ideal.
