Anytime a casting call specifies that I get very annoyed. jfc why? PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE. you can't "write" a person of X colour. throw it open to everyone and see who plays Katniss the best.

I'm sure actress is good, but give a lesser knoen actress a try - hopefully increasing the amount of people acting/getting attention

you can totally write a character of X color, though. (For example, Rue is explicitly "black". There's no way around it. Peeta is explicitly white. To cast other races in their parts would be to ignore the text entirely.) The problem is that Katniss was ambiguous enough in the books that they didn't really need to insist on a white actress.

Though, you know, I think they went with a white actress because Katniss' mom is white, and her sister is white (both explicitly; they're blonde and blue-eyed), and it's super uncommon for mixed kids to be blonde and blue-eyed. It would take up too much valuable screen time to set up an explanation of why Katniss appears to be a different race from the rest of her family (did they adopt her? Was she abandoned? Is this a red herring for some crazy twist about her parentage later on?)
It's kind of simple really.

re: second paragraph. I never thought about that. but then my family is mixed race so i guess i didn't think about it since i'm blond/green eyes/'olive' skin, my brother is olive, blond,blue eyes but my other brothers and sisters are kind of dark to pretty dark. so i figured katniss took after her dad and prim after her mother.

Yeah, the thing is...Katniss' mother and sister are blonde and blue eyed. To highlight that this is her sister, they probably asked for a white actress. You can go up in arms about whitewashing, but then you're stuck explaining why her sister looks nothing like her without a very strong, unneeded portrayal of her father. No, she doesn't need to be white from the books' perspective. But you're going to have a hell of a time explaining to the audience there's nothing behind why she looks nothing like her family.

Yes exactly. I'm shocked at the number of people who don't get this. J-law has some similar facial features to Willow and at a stretch I could see how they might be 'siblings.' I think her eye color highlights them being sisters for the uninitiated audience.
