Well, when you consider the fact that much of fandom is young women and girls, it's easy to see why all attention is focused on romance and how the boys effect everything, rather than the kickassery of Katniss. Which is sad, tbh.

Yeah, because of course girls are going to want to see the stupid romance plots that are always their only option if they have a main character, rather than see a girl actually kick ass for once.

Does she, though? I got into the series because I thought she would, and around the second instalment she had devolved completely into a figure head with very limited agency which she doesn't really use that much. I don't blame the character, I blame this trend to set up strong heroines and then Beat Them Down as hard as you can, though I suppose I can be grateful she wasn't gratuitously and descriptively raped.

I liked that she didn't conform to either of society's "female hero" stereotypes. Meaning, she wasn't some objectified girl solely for boys to rescue, but she also wasn't a kickass-all-the-time robot who was perfect and never had to admit to being wrong. Katniss was different. She has flaws. She has huge, massive, gaping wounds. And her flaws do define her. After what she went through, the emotional and physical stress, violence, and torture, she had every right to bread down. Wouldn't you? That's what makes her so relatable. That's why I enjoyed her as a kickass lead. Not because she was kickass 100% of the time without failure, but because she showed that you can be a human, a woman, a kickass person, and still fail. And you can recover.

(Even if, personally, I had hoped for a better recovery. I get why Collins went with the realistic approach, but I think it might have been a better message if there had been a bit more of a happy ending.)
