I'm not interested in a 'perfect' Onceler, I'm not interested in the actual Onceler- what I wanted was a dynamic Onceler, a character who wasn't just one-dimensional. Someone who felt like a human being who just sauntered vaguely downwards.

But he IS just really bland. A guitar and a preference towards feeding wildlife marshmellows and putting on a big green hat doesn't make a character have depth. His 'faults' are dull and generic and sanded-off, and he never provides us with any character strengths, more importantly. I can understand liking villains, but in comparison to Harry Lime, Vader, Alex Delarge, Cruella De Ville, Otto Octavius, The Joker, Mr. Freeze, Alonzo Harris and the ambiguous character of Charles Foster Kane- all of whom are pursuing a direct goal or just have sociopathy written into their bones (or both)- the Onceler just falls flat.

I've read on quite a lot of tumblrs that his fans are aware that the only reason they're in the Onceler fandom is because he's designed to be attractive and has a decent singing voice. So...

welp... I'm not really in the tumblr onceler fandom, I just thought he was pretty. I liked that he was made a more sympathetic character, and tbh I'd rather have an "everyman" villain than another mustache-twirling sociopath with a dark past. But mostly, he was just something for me to look at during the movie and have a few awkward feelings of "oh Katie you're never going to outgrow this being-attracted-to-cartoon-characters thing, are you? just embrace it, girl." "but but but it's Dr. Seuss for pete's sake!" "shhhhh, just go with it" towards. I don't think he's a great person or anything... having a crush on a cartoon character isn't that big of a commitment. Of course, you have every right to dislike the character, but I have the same right to find him physically cute and somewhat likable/interesting.

Oh, God, this. I had to take my baby nephew to the movies and I was, "Eh. Whatever. Let's get this over with." Um. Yeah. I still kind of hate myself for liking the Onceler and it doesn't help Ed Helms does his voice, uuuugh gross but can't stop. But eh lol.

ayrt

Oh absolutely, I have no problem with people thinking he's good-looking- because, lets face it and quote Jessica Rabbit, he was just drawn that way. (Absolutely do not blame the swoons- I blame the animation studio for trying to manipulate people)

Where I do take umbrage is people trying to claim that it's somehow more than a superficial crush, and there's secretly more to his character, and try to justify it. Because really, he's pretty vapid when you get right down to it.

I feel you on your cartoon crushes, though. :) I happen to think the everyman villain Kent Mansley is very attractive, despite him being a complete asshat the entire movie.

I agree that the movie sorely missed the opportunity to flesh out the Onceler by allotting a good portion of the movie to Ted's flimsy-built romance plot with Audrey and the "real" assigned villain of the movie, O'hare--both completely unnecessary additions which dragged the whole story down, imo. As a result, Onceler's descent into corruption over the span of several years was cut short to a two minute pop song.

After listening to Biggering, I think they knew what direction they wanted to go with the Onceler, but unfortunately that potential had to be watered down to appease a broader audience. What I love about the fandom--and any fandom, really- is that they take that potential and build upon it. And some of the shit that goes around Tumblr is hilarious.

But if that's not your cup of tea, that's cool. As long as you don't start equating like The Onceler to supporting the destruction of the environment and feeling the need that every fan has to give justifications for liking something you don't like, maybe we can all get along.
