I heard something about how Collins originally didn't want Gale as a love interest, only as a best friend, but her publishers pushed for the love triangle due to how popular they've gotten.

If it's true, it makes a ridiculous amount of sense given that every "I LOVE GALE!" scene comes off as so awkward and thrown in there. I couldn't even see where it came from when I picked up Catching Fire and saw she gave a damn about him like that.

That would explain so. much. about the triangle subplot. Namely, why it was so lopsided and often seemed absurdly random, especially the scenes with Gale.

It started earlier than CF. in THG there were tons of moments were katniss felt guilty about kissing Peeta because she was thinking of Gale. she wouldn't admit it at the time but she had feelings for him to some degree.
