I always side-eye when a character is advertised mainly on their race/ethnicity/gender/sexuality because it makes it seem like that's all there is to that character, like their only purpose is to check off all the little boxes. At least tell us a little about why we should be rooting for this person besides their skin color, plz.

Mmm, I think Marvel is trying to appeal to a wider audience here. For example, to the readers who want superheroes who look like them, and a black Spiderman is a really big move (I mean, how many really popular superheroes are not caucasian? And by popular, I mean "world-wide recognition" if not common knowledge).

And Peter Parker was such an iconic Spiderman that they felt they had to hammer in that the new Spiderman was a new person under the mask, not just Peter Parker in a new costume.

That said, a colour/a gender/a sexual orientation does not make a character, I agree.

Oh, I think it's great that they're showing more diverse superheroes, no complaints there. I just hate it when a character is reduced to or promoted solely as A Member Of XXX Demographic, rather than a person with a lot of different facets to who they are.

what about this picture is pushing race too hard?

i mean, it's just his face. does a dark-skinned face automatically mean THIS IS ABOUT RACIAL ISSUES? not, you know, this is what the character looks like?

besides miles' ethnicity, which is important to some readers and you know... there's nothing actually wrong with that, there's a lot else that his face in this image conveys!

1, that while this character is spiderman and you can expect his books to still have the same kind of flavor as the spiderman books did before, they're carrying on the story with a new character. not everyone knows that yet, and it's kind of an important selling point for this! whenever a superhero title gets passed on to a new character is a really good jumping in point for new readers, which the comics industry desperately needs. also from what i've heard, ultimate peter parker was not very much beloved and him being gone might catch the interest of people who would have read, but didn't like him.

2. he's really young. regular peter parker had a stupid and unnecessary major life reboot because the editors thought him having a stable adult life wasn't what the fans wanted. whether or not that's what the fans actually want, if they think that fans want a young spiderman, then they'd want the fans to know that's what's going on now. getting young people involved in comics is also a thing that they are trying hard to do. maybe they think that miles' age will make other kids be more interested.

3. he looks like someone who's shy or maybe nervous about filling the shoes, but also really excited to be spiderman. there's that fresh-faced kid look about him that says a lot about what a story about him might involve. if his expression was drawn to look carefree and reckless or fearless and confident or even terrified, the reader would be getting a way different impression of who this new spiderman actually is.

all of these things are pretty necessary for them to get out an accurate impression of their comic! in fact this stuff (new spiderman, he's young, this is this guy's personality) is pretty much the selling points here. how would someone even convey that same information and have an eye-catching picture that's so easily identifiable as a spiderman comic without showing his face?

What makes you think the OP was referring to this picture alone and not the general way Marvel has been pushing the character? That being said, it's pretty obvious why they show him without the mask, and it's probably not for any of the reasons you mentioned.

Also I'm not sure where you heard Ultimate Peter Parker was not well-liked. If anything, he was more well-liked than the 616 version at the time he was killed off.

i haven't seen all the pictures and i felt that if this is the one they chose for the secret, it's fairly representative

they're advertising that he's a new character taking up an old mantle, they'd be showing his face no matter what.

They didn't have to do it with Ben Reilly or Dick Grayson, did they? With the former, all that was needed was a different costume.

One would have to be incredibly naive in this day and age to think that the new Spider-Man being black has nothing to do with the marketing. Especially after the nationwide buzz prior to Mile's debut.

Now I agree that a black Spidey IS a big deal--but I think the character works better when you're not bringing attention to that.
