I think the unrequited first love thing might be this fandom assumption that McG had a ladyboner for Voldemort in her school days.

No seriously, fuck that. That's a horrible headcanon. As far as I'm concerned, even teenage!McGonagall would've been able to see past Riddle's good guy bullshit.

It's canon because J.K Rowling created it and made this McGonagall's official backstory. It's not canon in the sense that it is not even mentioned in the books.
