I'm a little confused to be honest. Why does the lottery keep getting brought up? Is there some different lottery I didn't read? Because that was about a stoning. It seems so far removed from battle royale or hunger games to me and I don't get why people keep drawing parallels. Long Walk and Running Man I get, mind.

No, it's the one about the stoning. It's too short to really have a LOT in common with the others but it is about people getting picked at random to (almost-definitely) get killed. I didn't make the connection until I saw the Hunger Games movie but watching the kids all gathered around while someone chose their names out of a bowl, I thought of it.

I think it's still too different to really be in the same category. The Lottery might be really similar to one scene in the Hunger Games, but the rest of it isn't really related anymore.

but The Lottery is a short. The entire story is one scene. So having one scene in THG be incredibly similar (even in the way it builds, there are people acting like the "winner" is so lucky, and the reader doesn't even really get what it means until the names are drawn) isn't exactly ~a bridge too far~

Battle Royale's only similar to the Games themselves and most of the series overall is about other things, but that comparison is everywhere.

I don't remember people in the Lottery acting like the "winner" is lucky.

I also don't think that the Lottery not being long enough to have other scenes makes it more similar to the whole Hunger Games. That's not a great way to compare things, the Lottery is short, but it still needs to be compared under it's own merits.

I also don't really agree with everyone comparing Battle Royale and Hunger Games either.

I haven't read or seen Hunger Games, but having read both The Lottery and Battle Royale, this is a huge stretch.

okay Lemon

The Lottery and Battle Royale have nothing in common with each other, and both their similarities to the Hunger Games are fairly shallow to be honest, but clearly there are enough people who see it that it gets called out.

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2012-04-03 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like a lot of those people are people who don't know one of the sources and are just like "people randomly selected to die!" because that's literally the only connection. That's not even really how Battle Royale works.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2012-04-03 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
no, it's not. It's how The Lottery worked. The Battle Royale connection is that it's a fight to the death in a confined space, and the only contestants are teenagers. oh and that some of em luck out with weapons, and some really don't. That's it.

I just said the connections were shallow ones, man. Which is why even though I saw and then read BR a bunch of years ago, when I read THG even in the midst of all this finger-pointing I was just like

No, I'm not talking about HG, I'm saying between Battle Royale and The Lottery. I can't figure out how multiple people came up with that connection if they've read both, since there really isn't one.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-04-03 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
I helped start this, but I'd imagine because the classroom is chosen at random?

That's me stretching though. If it's all based on one scene, I conclude that I don't get it because people were trying too hard to connect it in the first place.

[identity profile] luxshine.livejournal.com 2012-04-03 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the class being selected at random for the good of the people. That's it. And the author acknowledged it was one of his influences so that's where it comes from.
