I can understand if these friends are people you know in real life, and are known to be dangerous when people think differently, or maybe have some sort of status above you (such as boss) that could get you into trouble.

But if we're talking about random people you friended, and live in other countries...

Eh, sometimes it's hard not to care what online friends think, especially if they're your main source of fandom interaction. But I think if you don't feel comfortable talking openly about things you like, they may not be good friends. Why waste too much time with people like that if you don't have to?

Maybe I'd understand more if I ever had such friends. I count myself lucky, I guess. I have very open-minded friends online.
