I think he basically said as much on Inside the Actors' Studio, among other places; he was trying to talk about actually serious things and everyone was just like "LOL RICK JAMES" and missing the point. :P

Yeah, I think Dave Chapelle became the victim of his own success. Before Comedy Central his humour was more flexible, because people expected it, I guess. After the success of The Chapelle Show everyone wanted him to do the Rick James and Playa Hatas skits and it boxed him in.

I loved what he said his dad told him when he told his parents that he wanted to forfeit college and go into comedy. The dad was all, "Do it, but draw a line in the sand, if the price gets too much, jump." Dave was all, "Tickets to Africa, baby."

His 'purple drank' skit still makes me laugh, and I loved Half Baked back in the day.
