You made the right choice. He's pretty much taken over the entire series now to the point all Naruto cares about is redeeming him even though he's become a murderous psychopath who's tried to kill his own friends quite a few times by now.

And to add on that all he wants to do is "MURDER THE LEAF VILLAGE REVENGE AHHH" Even though Itachi wanted the exact opposite for him.

Oh, he also tried to murder his girlfriend, so there's that also. Lol.

More like the other way around. He didn't seem to have any interest in her at all. Or...anyone for that matter.
