No shit. For all the comments and innuendo and jokes, we don't see them being any closer to a romantic/sexual relationship than they were at the beginning.

I think that is probably still subtext at best though, given that John isn't like "oh yes that's true I also wish to bone Sherlock despite my typical preference for women" or whatever.

No, not really. In "Hounds", when the guy apologizes for not having a double room for them, John starts saying, "We're not a couple". And nothing in "Hounds" or "TRF" (or "ASIB", for that matter) suggests they are.

In TRF in the last scene with John and his therapist, she asks him if there are things he wishes he'd said to Sherlock and tells him to say them now. But he can't.

Purely speculation at the moment but could be a confession of love? We'll have to see.

That would be nice. But something to keep in mind: ASiB ended on New Year's Day. According to John's blog, Sherlock's "death" was in June. If that little exchange had such an impact on John, why would it take him six months to act on it?

One could argue: a)he needed time to mull it over and come to accept it for himself; and/or b)he figured it out sooner or later but kept it to himself out of respect for Sherlock or fear of ruining what was already established between them, and/or c)the writers have no concept of time passing. I'm a Downton Abbey fan: (c) was a huge problem for it in season 2. =p

Not that I think that's where they're going with the characters, but I could see understandable and non-contrived reasons for a delay.
