I think, in retrospect, it's obvious if you've been exposed to enough media with Slap Slap Kiss dynamics and are properly genre savvy. Back when I first read them, I was, and so it did seem obvious to me that they were going to get together (not that I really cared) but going by the people I know, if you're not as familiar with that convention, I could see how it would just seem like personality clashing rather than chemistry.

Completely.

I wasn't so aware when I read them, and I perceived it more as personality clashing. After several years and more than several other stories, I can see it much more. Still makes me eyeroll a little, but I get it. And I also don't care much about the trio (at least not compared to, say, Marauders era).

It's funny to see what movie-only people think, too.
My sister expected Harry to either get with Hermione or Luna.
When I told her about H/G and R/Hr she was like, "WTF."
I know it's different than reading the books, but it's still not obvious to everyone.
I pretty much anticipated it forever, though. I even anticipated H/G wayy before their relationship started to actually develop.
