Hahahahaha... ha ha... ha.... no.

I mean, okay, that does have some part of it, but in large parts it's because fandom used to be majority male and there was a lot of misogyny in fandom. So, women in fandom had to learn to bash female characters as well--slut-shaming, general "ew, dis bitch" whatnot--to fit in with the men in fandom.

Younger ladies come in as fandom grows, and they learn the rules from watching others, which is "hate on the ladies".

Time passes, more ladies come in, they learn the rules from watching others... it's a vicious, vicious cycle, even now with fandom being predominantly female we continue it because it was what we learned as young Fandom Newblets. A cycle of hate, started a long time ago because it was a boys' game.

Internalized misogyny, man.

Oh grow the fuck up.

SA!

Oh bugger it all to hell and back, that reply was not meant for here! *mortified*

Essentially what you're saying is, women just can't think for themselves. Charming.

No one is denying women the autonomy to be raging bitches, calm down.

...seriously? As an old-time fan from the 70's, SO NOT BUYING THIS. The women I was involved with in fandom from the 70's and 80's were PRO-Women, not ANTI-Women. It wasn't our fault that TV/Fandom was specifically geared to pickle parties. We were proud of Uhura and Leia and Sarah Jane Smith and especially the wonderful, amazing Emma Peel. I was shocked at the hatred showing toward female characters when I got back to fandom in the 2000's.

It still dismays me to see how many female characters are treated like little more than a problem to be gotten rid of by writers/artists who want two male characters together. I like my strong female characters. I want more of them.

It's like feminism stepped backwards

Yes, there is a lot of women bashing other women out there, HOWEVER:

Just because a show/whatever is male-centric or someone writes male/male slash, doesn't actually mean AUTOMATIC SEXISM

LOL, no on the fandom dominated by men bullshit. Everything I've ever heard about ficcers/fanartists indicates the majority were women even before the Internet, they just had a harder time networking--they bought and traded paper zines, sent letters, etc.

I can personally testify that fandom has been a female dominated space in Western and Asian fandoms since 1989, when I got computer access and access to the Internet.

Hatred of female characters may still by influenced by internalized misogyny, I'm not saying it's not but it's not b/c of male dominated fandom (although it does depend on where you hang online somewhat) in this area of fandom. Women are the primary ficcers and fanartists.

Women still other women as competition for men (limited resources) and in their careers instead of being a "sisterhood" where women help each other. And, yes, men promote this to divide women (fact: more women than men and I think this scares them to death) and to convince women to act against their own best interests (see the attacks on women's rights going on in the USA and women are buying into this crap!).

This!

[identity profile] drunken-clowns.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Not really.

I think it's more accurate to say that many female fans don't get a very good initial experience with female characters. Many times the girl is just "the girl", a caricature the real fan can't see herself in. Once she's seen enough of that, she notices a pattern, doesn't like it, and generalizes it to every female character without thinking critically about it (and we're talking very young people, who also are taught in real life that sexism is over and still being a feminist makes you a humorless bitch. Some 15-year-olds think critically about gender, but it's unreasonable to expect all or most of them to.)

The misinterpretation of "strong female characters!" that a lot of writers unfortunately fall for is part of this.

..I really, really don't think that's the reason.

Um, huh? I came into Trek fandom over 20 years ago, which was a LOT of guys, pre-internet, and I never felt pressure to hate on the female characters - they focused a lot on the males, but there's a big difference between liking something, and hating something else. If your fandom was that way, so be it, but don't tar the whole kaboodle.
