Oh come off it, you really don't believe that there are some people out there who legitimately hate men irrationally? You want to see misandry in action, come hang out with my mother sometime. There's a reason my dad divorced her as soon as he realized how horrible she was, and there's a reason I have custody of my younger brother (hint: it's because my mom was an abusive lunatic and neglected him in favor of my half-sister- she literally told him the reason she didn't care about him was because he was a boy).

Actually, on second thought, DON'T come hang out with my mother. One of her is bad enough. D:

There is prejudice against men. Misandry, however, would require women as a group to hold power over men, which they do not. Your mother sounds like someone I'd frankly hate, tbh, obviously she has issues.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-06 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I always had heard misandry defined as hatred against men? That does make sense though. Thanks for explaining.

And yeah, my mom does have issues- not really sure what they are, TBH. She thinks I'm a traitor because I went to live with my dad as soon as I possibly could, and because I took her to court for custody of my brother as soon as I realized what was going down. Yet because I'm female she tries to "make amends" with me every few months- it never goes well, usually ends up with me drunk and screaming into the phone.

Sorry, you probably didn't want to know all this... didn't mean to dump on you.

[identity profile] margerydaw-s2.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
No problem.

That sounds pretty exhausting, really. I wouldn't be able to handle much of that without cutting contact.

And don't worry. Everyone needs to vent sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-06 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it gets difficult, but I want to be able to check up on my half-sister (although it looks like she's shaping up to be Version 2.0 of our mother so I don't know why I really even bother, she obviously doesn't want my help), plus, she's supposed to pay me child support for my brother (ha- when I get the check it's because the court's threatened to garnish her wages if she doesn't pay up).

She's a real piece of work, and it's fresh in my mind since she called on Saturday. Hopefully that means I'm safe for the next couple of months, though.

That makes no sense whatsoever. Misogyny is misogyny, regardless of who or how many people is enforcing it. It's still sexism. It's still the hatred and discrimination and prejudice against a person's gender.

Misandry is no different.

Unbelievable.

[identity profile] margerydaw-s2.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
It IS different, because men still get better pay doing the same job that women do, men have autonomy over their reproductive organs...

Unbelievable.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think we're talking about two entirely different things here. I've looked up the term 'misogyny' in both of my dictionaries and it pretty much comes down to this: the hatred of and discrimination against women.

Ugh. Hold on.

ETA: I've read a few articles online, and oh. Ok, I think I understand where you're coming from (thanks Dr. David G. Gilmore and Y!A). That said, I still can't say I agree. Misogyny to me will always be exactly what I described above. Misandry, too. It all comes down to the hatred and prejudice towards the opposite sex. That's the bottom line.

And from what I'm reading online it seems that most people interpret misandry/misogyny differently anyway, so for the time being (until I research the topic more and have more resources/information to make a better informed opinion), my feelings haven't changed in the slightest.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-06 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
the words and definitions included in those dictionaries were probably written by men

just sayin

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
-_-

That's my serious? *headdesk* face, jsyk.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-06 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
So that automatically makes them wrong?

[identity profile] sephystabbity.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Misandry is no different.

No. But considering your comments all over this thread, not really suprised at you not getting it.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Right. Well, from the many articles and discussions I've read about the subject in the past 1.5hrs+ alone I've come to the conclusion that everyone interprets it differently. *Shrugs* There seems to be a bottom line-- that line being the hatred/prejudice towards men and women-- and everything from that point on being up to the individual.

At any rate, I'll continue to look into it, particularly the origin and development of the term. I doubt my opinion will change, however, since I've already read quite a few counter-arguments and haven't yet been even remotely persuaded to change my mind.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-06 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
What you're talking about is sexism. Sexism requires power. So you cannot be sexist against men. But you can be misandrist. Misandry is just the hatred of men, not a systematic prejudice against men (which doesn't exist).

Much like how you cannot be racist against white people, but you can be prejudiced against them.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Seeing definitions used properly makes me happy. A misogynist does not have to be in a position of power to hate women. It's a state of mind. Sexism is an institution of practices designed to limit women based on them being female.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
I agree and I think this is a very comprehensive explanation, thank you.

[identity profile] dontgiveahoot.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this. You can certainly have misandrist individuals, but misandry is not socially institutionalised the way that misogyny is.

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think there's a difference between the society and the individuals. Our society is misogynist. People can be misogyinist, misandrist OR misanthrope (or nice people).

(Anonymous) 2012-04-06 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Don't bother, anon. Everything is a man's fault, even (and especially) when it is a woman's fault. You can't with with the SJWs, they're too devoted to being oppressed.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-06 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I noticed that..

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
I have a cousin who literally beats on her husband. =/ We don't even try to get involved anymore because he used to get really upset whenever anyone tried to help and she, well. To say she's unreasonable would be putting it lightly.

There was an incident where one of my aunts actually called the police and, well... it didn't turn out well. I don't know all the details but I think the cops didn't take it seriously at all (It was years ago, but from what I remember hearing about it they might have even mocked the situation), it caused a huge fight with that part of the family, and they've been sort-of estranged ever since.

Not the same as your situation, obviously, but I wanted to let you know that I'm very familiar with female-caused domestic violence. A lot of people like to play it off like it's not serious-- or possible-- but it really is.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's sad, a lot of people feel like there is no such thing as domestic violence against men, or think that somehow it "doesn't count", shouldn't matter, or is not as important as domestic violence against women because it's not as common - which is really sad, because clearly, it is possible, and it affects a lot of people.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-07 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
Reminds me of the tropes "abuse is okay when it's female on male" and "rape is okay when it's female on male".
