Aren't male characters just as predictable? I mean, TV Tropes suggests that all characters are predictable. If so, why is male predictability easier for you to find interesting than female predictability?

they definitely can be predictable, but i find them to be often less so than the female characters. but i don't know, maybe it's just my perception. i'm a woman so it's much easier for me to read female characters, and in order for them to surprise me it might take a lot more ingenuity from the writer than they usually spend on a character. but then again, like i said, there are exceptions, and they don't tend to be particularly noteworthy. for example, in hp, i really liked hermione and luna, but i couldn't stand ginny. i knew exactly where that character (ginny) was going and just didn't want to read about her at all. i don't think hermione and luna are like, brilliant characters or anything either, but they're comparable to the interesting male characters in the book in the sense that i was really curious as to where their stories were headed because it wasn't obvious for me.

I guess, I would have to ask what male characters you liked in HP, and why they weren't predictable. I love Sirius, but I found him utterly predictable, as well as Snape, Dumbledore, Remus. You could tell how they would respond to situations pretty easily. I didn't always find Ron predictable, though I know some people did. What made the male characters you liked unpredictable for you?

I personally felt Hermione and Luna were predictable. Ginny had moments where she wasn't, where I though Rowling could go in two different directions. Luna was basically one-note, the weird girl with enlightening comments no one understands. There was very little depth to her, which didn't take away from her character at all to me. Hermione was such a trope, I cannot. But again, I loved Ginny, Hermione, and Luna for the part they played in the narrative.
