It's free, you probably liked the original enough to leave a positive comment, the author is never going to know that you edited it, and you're not going around telling anyone that yours is better or taking credit for the fanfic.

It's probably not something the author would like to know, but as long as you don't tell them, who cares? You didn't hurt anyone and you don't need to feel bad. It's just fanfic and you don't seem like you're being a jerk to real people or anything.
