Misandry by definition is a hatred of men. Sexism is the systematic oppression you're referring to. Sexism = prejudice + power.

Misandry and misogyny are both prejudices. Since misogyny often goes hand in hand with power, it is sexism. Misandry does not have systematic power, and is therefore not sexism. But misandry most certainly exists (much less common, but you know).

Hm, that's an odd thing then - I've always heard it the other way 'round. I'm from central Europe, so it's probably due to definition disproportions? Sexism is the general term to describe hatred towards gender while misogyny/misandry is used in relation to power.

I like this definition of yours. :) It's useful for explaining to people why misandry is not a thing.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-06 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but her definition is wrong, soooo..

[identity profile] greeneyed.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm, it's interesting how definitions vary. We mostly (besides few special cases) agree that there's no such thing as male opression and active discrimination against men. We can argue in historical/sociological context whether hatred against men is rational/irrational in various cases. I've seen irrational hatred, just based on the fact that someone's male and in someone's opinion inferior, just curious what do westerners call it - androphobia?

Should know better than butting into women's discussion on hatred :P, but I never do... I like to learn new stuff.

Edit:
Looked more closely and compared the definitions, I think androphobia would be more appropriate - it would describe one individual not systematic hatred against a group. Though, funny thing, sexism in Poland is now defined as a behaviour.

I don't see how this applies when you consider homophobia and such related hate crimes that result in injury or death.

I wouldn't go into the whole 'phobia' thing. Remember the shitstorm that happened with the so-called 'heterophobia' a few weeks back? Phobic behavior is also linked strongly to societal preference- you can't link it to individualized behavior so easily.

Snap, you're right, possibly should stick to calling a hateful individual just this a hateful individual. I must have had some sort of a brainfart yesterday, too much work. Can't really call out women on their irrational hate, you never know their background and being the opressed group they can't engage in systematic discrimination of men. I'm going to hide in under my desk before I embarass myself more ;) .

Haha, it's coo.

Hateful and spiteful is hateful and spiteful always.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-06 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
You like it because it fits your personal philosophy. But we've already established that, by definition, misandry is "a thing". It's just not the thing you want in your reality.
