I actually took a Russian Fairy Tale class in college and the professor discussed that the reason Phantom Menace as a whole is less fulfilling than the other Star Wars movies is that it bucked Western story telling traditions. Star Wars generally fits Joseph Campbell's heroic tale theories perfectly, all except Phantom Menace.

It's been a decade since I had the class, so I don't remember all of her analysis and why...but she spent a large part of a class on it. Lol. The gist is, that we are culturally taught that certain patterns make up a story and whether or not we realize it, if a story doesn't follow those patterns we find it less fulfilling. Those patterns vary by culture of course. In the case of Star Wars, episodes IV-VI were very traditional tales so it was even more jarring for fans when one was not.

Anyway, it was an interesting class. Lol.
