I'm not HORRIBLY SHOCKED AND APPALLED by the very idea of this, but I do feel it would be a little less... offputting? I guess... if you were writing fic of it, not appointing yourself somebody's editor without permission.

Have you tried asking the person how s/he feels about heavy concrit/editing? Personally, I love betas who are invested enough in my work to tell me not just that there are typos on page 11 but that an entire chapter isn't right. Pisses me off at the time, but yields far better work in the end.

However, the thing about a beta is that if I disagree strongly, I can say "No, chapter 4 stays as it is -- but I will see what I can do with that sunset scene." Whereas if someone changes everything around without my knowing that's different. I'd prefer to be told and make the decision myself, personally.

But would knowing someone did that kill me? No, not really.
