I don't think it's all that nitpicky--the use of music can really enhance or hurt a show, and if the anime isn't very good at using the advantages of animation as a medium...well, why watch the anime version at all, instead of reading the manga?

(That being said, I haven't seen Maid-Sama yet so I don't know what the music is like and can't comment on it specifically.)

I have given up on more than one anime early into its run because the background music sucked. NOTHING kills the mood faster than a crappy, bland soundtrack.

This was exactly my problem with the Skip Beat! anime (until the really weak ending anyway). But KwMs wasn't really any better about it either, I was just able to ignore it with how gleeful I was about how perfect the seiyuu were.
