Potter is probably headed for 'cult film' status a`la Rocky Horror Picture Show and movies in that same spectrum.
I'm almost sure Warner Brothers will try to reboot it in 10 years time & the small niche left of the fandom will produce wank in regards to this but if their is money to be made, Hollywood tends to not care.

Long story short, you think Potter fans are elitists now?
Just wait 10 years, you'll long for these days.

I can definitely see this happening. I mean, it's been years now - as much as I'd like to see HP win more awards, I don't expect it to get any at this point. It's been winding down for a while now. I don't see it going away, and I think it will reach cult status if it's not practically there now. I just don't get why it's such a big deal that it didn't get a huge amount of recognition, there's plenty of other great things out there that deserve recognition too.

Besides, I'm not as big a fan of the HP movies as I am the books.

Could the same thing really happen? I thought Rocky Horror was a bomb and an obvious vanity project when it first came out, and people became "fans" of it because they wanted to have fun with how terrible it was. I go to live shows and everything and I've never once ran into someone who actually thinks Rocky Horror is good.

Then again, I'm probably misunderstanding what a cult film is?

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you're right, the other commenter is wrong. I didn't really love the HP movies, but they're still far too successful (and definitely too successful financially) to be cult films. "Cult" implies a small but fanatical following. Harry Potter is on the level of Star Wars.

[identity profile] drunken-clowns.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
And Star Wars still has a fandom, look at that anon who wants to pork Darth Vader~

I'd say the fandom really has nothing to worry about <3

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Not surprising. The HP movies suck. (I love the books, though.)

[identity profile] box-life.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
There are dumbasses in every fandom. The HP fandom is huge, which means there are a lot of dumb people. It doesn't mean they're the majority, there are just numerically a lot of them.

I was way more annoyed that kids voted for Adam Sandler to win something.

[identity profile] ladyknightanka.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
lol, This.

This. He has never been funny. Ever.

[identity profile] hooves.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not in the fandom enough to actually see wank about that. XDDD I feel glad I suppose.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
My experiences with the Harry Potter fandom have been pretty positive, and I don't think most people are that extreme.

But I do feel like there's some tendency, not just within the fandom but in general, to act as though because Harry Potter is wildly popular, it's a universally important and loved series. Maybe it's just me. I just remember being 12, being only moderately entertained by the first book (it was several years before I read the rest of the series), and being confused by what I perceived as this assumption that everyone both read the books and recognized Harry Potter as super awesome.

I think I got this from the mainstream media more than the fandom, though. Within a fandom, it's more natural for people to feel like their fandom is the coolest thing ever, and while sometimes people can get annoying about it, it's often pretty innocent.

[identity profile] rattyrayvn.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
You expressed my feelings very well. Sure, I liked Harry Potter, but it's not the be-all and end-all of our generation's entertainment.

[identity profile] piratesswoop.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I was almost in tears from laughing so hard at people on tumblr/twitter/lj when the Oscar noms were announced. The "omg how dare they not nominate DH2 for best picture, lord of the rings got a nomination!!!!!!!" as if the adaptations were even remotely comparable.

LOTR trimmed unnecessary information and added stuff here and there to make for a better book-to-screen transfer, and the scale was just grandiose. You can't really say the same for the HP films, which seem kind of like a disjointed mess when viewed consecutively.
