...what? Yuki treated Tohru like a princess from day one.

And are you referring to Machi as a mary-sue? What are you on?

*re-reads comment*

Dude, I think you got your series switched up. Ahiru is from Princess Tutu.

Honestly, calling Machi a Mary Sue kind of shocked me. Also, I could identify a lot with her, so I decided to refrain from posting a rather emotional reaction.

sa

In a way (not necessarily a good one) I don't think I've ever seen a character who is like me, in a normal setting (well, more or less... but as far as Machi was concerned, there were no hunger games, no giant mechas, no diclonii running around.) Someone who's destructive and angry, someone who just doesn't know who she is because she has been drilled her entire life but has lost this purpose now and doesn't know where she's going. And I wish I could find someone who understands this.

I could identify with certain aspects of her personality, as well, which is one of the reasons why I love her so much.

Aside from that, she's just such an interesting character. If Natsuki Takaya ever decided to create an extra volume revolving around her and Yuki's relationship, I'd be sooo happy.

But yeah, she's so far from being a mary-sue that the above anon's comment totally threw me off. Just. How?

Pair-the-spares + how-dare-she-break-up-my-ship mentality = disregard-all-character-traits-and-label-as-mary-sue? IDK.

Tbh I always thought Machi was a bit Mary-Sue-ish, too. Even with her backstory she still just seemed like this flat, boring character who had no purpose other than to give Yuki someone to end up with. Any flaws she had were just ~intriguing~ to Yuki and therefore not really presented as flaws...

Maybe if she wasn't a character thrown in at the end and had gotten more time, she would have been OK, but ugh. She was so unnecessary.

But that's the funny thing, she isn't thrown in at the end. I know it feels that way, but Yuki joins the council in volume 13 (or even earlier). And I think that being bland was the entire point. (Although I didn't think she was really bland, but I'm possibly biased.)
