that doesn't fly. you're changing the scenario now by having god coming down in person and being like whaddup homies and leaving the entire original argument behind. if god proved himself to be real, of course everyone would go because it would cease to be a matter of faith or religion at all and be a matter of fact. that's not what we're talking about though, and currently religious people do not know for a fact that this will happen, and something like that happening would change the entire concept of "religion" to begin with, invalidating the entire argument

does it make a difference? not to the religious who already believe he's real, i mean come on lmao

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
it does, actually. religion is built around faith, which is defined as belief in something you don't know for sure. christian people don't know, but they believe and have faith, thats the whole point. think of the story of the town that's praying for rain, and brings their objects of faith, and the little child who brings an umbrella.

if god comes down and proves he's real and is all sup bros, that changes everything about faith

maybe it changes everything about faith, but it changes nothing about whether or not religious people believe in him. if they believe in him either way then the scenario still stands but ok for your sake just change the act of god physically coming down to god appearing in a ~vision

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
that's still twisting the argument. a vision is still an act that would "prove" to many people that something exists, and the "fact" that they had a vision still remains.

to recap, what the original debate was about was religious people currently, now, without any outside forces acting on them, being asked to choose between their religion and "everything else in their lives." you say "almost everyone" would pick their religion and i doubted that greatly and laughed some. there we go

agree to disagree?

fuck ok so then they just read the bible and they believe all the shit and then asked themselves, would i pick god over all these worldly things????

because yeah they are gonna choose god ok

but sure if you think they wouldnt then thats cool too idrc tbh lol

Religious people choose worldly things over their god all the time, is what the ayrt is saying. They even struggle with doubt.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
no they don't, they try to balance the two. but once again if they consciously had to choose they would choose god

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
How do you know that?

Anyone who is part of a religion that disavows premarital sex, but has premarital sex is not choosing God first. And we know that that happens a lot, so a lot of people chose earthly things over God.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
ummm because if they don't then they go to hell/don't exist and pretty much everybody BY DEFAULT is going to choose their god, THE most important thing in their lives, over everything else that wont even matter once they die

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Except they often don't.

You didn't address the second part of my comment.

You know how everyone who is part of a religion that doesn't allow premarital sex, but has it anyway is disobeying their religion and thus God?

That's where repentance comes in, I think. You can do anything as long as you're genuinely sorry afterward even if you go in knowing that you're doing a bad thing? Or sth? It's like get out of Hell free?

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
>they often don't
care to demonstrate this

nobody is without sin, the gr8 thing about christianity is that luckily they have an outlet through jesus christ to reconnect with god. if they repent for their mistakes then god will forgive, so yeah they're going to sin, intentionally or otherwise

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
So wait, so if I say, "I don't believe in God, but I feel real bad about that," I get to go to heaven?

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
no, you have to be a child of god to be graced with salvation in the first place. you have to accept jesus christ as lord and saviour before you can receive repentance for being a dickface

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
RELIGIOUS PEOPLE DONT DO THAT, ASCEND KNOWS ALL OF THEM PERSONALLY AND CAN PERSONALLY ATTEST THAT ALMOST ALL OF THEM NEVER, EVER, okay. Not even doubt.

Lol why are you even trying with this person.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't Ascend say s/he wasn't religious? Wouldn't it be hard to know all of them if you aren't in that circle? The bigger question is whether this counts as denying god and whether Ascend is going to hell now.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] puppetmon.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
lol no they choose worldly things over their adherance to god's laws

they aren't like BBL GOD I'M GOING TO STOP BELIEVING IN YOU FOR FIVE MINUTES WHILE I JACK A CANDY BAR FROM THE SUPERMARKET

given a choice between their belief in god and their sins then yeah they would all pick god
