No, I mean the bets god made with the devil that people would still worship him even if he destroyed their lives. I would hesitate to call that a reason. It certainly wasn't the human's fault that their god has a serious gambling problem.

You're referring to the story of Job.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
are you talking about job's fiasco because from what i understood of that, god made the "bet" with satan simply to use him to bless job in the first place. he used job as a means by which he could send a message to satan, and job was happier for it.

a lot of awful shit happens in the world but god never promised we would be free of worldly tragedies.

DA

Yipes. That sounds like a big justification for abusive relationships there.

The Job story doesn't seem to care about twisting things to make sure God's being a good guy when he's allowing Job to be tormented to win the bet with Satan.

I know a lot of people like the idea that "God has a reason" for there being terrible tragedies in the world, but if you don't know what the reason is and can't imagine a single one that would make a tragedy necessary, it's the same as having no reason. It's not supposed to make sense yadda yadda.

ok but it's fucking god we're talking about here

i will never understand how people can assume that human morals and perspectives are the Highest View and anything god does - despite the fact that he is the supreme being of the heavens and all that shit - would somehow be subject to scrutiny like he's a PERSON??? that needs to justify his shit to stupid mortal beings like us???

if the bible says god is good and just, and if the bible says god did X thing, then X thing was good and just, no matter what cultural implications it would have to US. if you believe god actually did these things then surely you believe he's good and just too, so you should just come to the understanding that hey maybe our views are warped, maybe we as ordinary people shouldnt hope to understand god's plan or his m.o. in general. it's not something we have any authority to question in such a way, though i guess you're more than welcome to if you want a cosmic kick in your ass after you die

assuming god is real etc etc w/e

all god did in the job story is remove job's holy protection, allowing satan to take worldly things from job in an attempt to turn job away from god. if anything you should be pissed at satan for being a dick

dude, just admit that you're religious.

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
if i could truthfully and undoubtedly say that, i would be a happier person.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, what happens is that god likes to make points to the devil by using his people as meat puppets and his people are always happier in the end because it's a fictional story that's been re-translated many times and was originally written (though not actually written, more like passed around orally for maximum customization) to help control people who didn't understand their world.

In the story of Job god tells satan that he thinks he can take everything from Job and that Job will still worship him. He picks Job because Job has been particularly good to him, and prayed to him most fiercely. Satan says that that is totally stupid and that Job only worships god because god treats him well. Then, god and satan work together to kill Job's children, destroy his livelihood and his health, and essentially reduce him to a husk of a human being with nothing to live for. Eventually Job is like "Why am I even alive, God?" and god is like "Dude, you're alive because I say so now suck it up and deal."

And then Job gets new kids who are way better than the old ones.

I actually used to be pretty religious in sort of an odd way. I stopped believing in god when I developed logical thinking skills but I lived in a household where I had to pretend in order to be loved, so I've read the bible many times searching for meaning in my life. There's nothing to suck the hope out of you quite like the actual not-for-kids bible.

tl;dr but skimming i saw >developed logical thinking skills

lmfao @ u thinking natural science/logic/etc is meant to explain the supernatural

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
No, I just stopped believing in god around the same time I realized I'd have to pretend I believed in god if I wanted my own family to pretend to love me.

I must admit I smiled a bit about you skimming a bible story. It had amusing implications.

are you god

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose it would matter how you mean. But since I know I exist then I'd have to say no. As for logic explaining supernatural things, I do not think of god as a supernatural thing. The development of religion through history is extremely logical to me. I can see how and some of the why, and none of it requires even the smallest glimmer of anything supernatural.

God is a story that got out of hand. It's a lot like Harry Potter that way.

lol right everyone that bitches about god not being nice has clearly never read the fucking bible

and why the fuck should god be nice he's fucking god he can do whatever the shit he wants

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
my fav part is when they use things in the bible to discredit other things in the bible

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
when a human does terrible things because he's in a position of power and he can do whatever the shit he wants, it's horrible and we try to stop him

when god does terrible things because he's in a position of power and he can do whatever the shit he wants, we worship him

and this is why i don't follow any of the abrahamic religions

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I think the continuation of this is that if god can do what the fuck he likes and what the fuck he likes is horrible things, then ignoring him is probably to best for everyone.

"Well if you don't do what god wants, you can't spend eternity with him!" Well fucking good, that guy is an asshole anyway.
