Your interpretation of Haymitch's drinking is pretty fair. We find out about his Hunger Games in the second book, and from what we're told he didn't actually kill anybody (so I'm really confused why the OP chooses him as somebody who killed selfishly in self-defense). But I would imagine that doesn't make the memories of what happened any less of a horror show.

He's also forced into being a mentor and since at the beginning of the story there hasn't been a victor from District 12 since he won, that means that he's essentially led 64 kids to the slaughter. If that doesn't make you want to drink...

And as somebody above mentioned, the Captial punished him for manipulating the arena by killing pretty much everyone he cared about. I don't judge him for turning to the drink.
