I don't think the OP has any interest in trying to convince their friend that the way they feel about Christianity is the way they feel about fandom. At most it seems like they wish their friend would respect their disinterest in religion at least as much as they'd respect their disinterest in something like a fandom.

I agree it might be hopeless either way, but I don't get the sense that the OP doesn't actually get how evangelical Christians can be. Not only are they taught it's a matter of eternal life or death, they're taught a thousand reasons why they should ignore any feelings that they're being rude by proselytizing.

Now that I read it again, it seems like the OP is trying to make that comparison as a way of maybe salvaging their friendship. But if that's the case, it's not going to work, and they'd be better off just ending the friendship.
