Yeah, and everyone has supported tax programs they don't agree with, that's not the same and you know it.

It still makes you a shitty person to lie to your friends to take their money for something they disagree with.

I think abortions should be covered by the state. The fact that not every woman who wants an abortion can afford one means that many women don't actually have a choice about whether or not to have an abortion.

I think lying to people about where the money is going is a lesser evil than forcing a woman to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term. Since we have no way of knowing if an alternative money raising plan may have worked I can only disapprove so much. The bulk of my disapproval goes to the shitty system that left a woman in need of an abortion unable to easily get one.

Or she could just say "I need money urgently for a personal problem."

It may be worth it to lie rather than not have an abortion, but that doesn't make lying right or okay. The least evil is just being as vague as necessary.

Because a vague personal problem that they won't discuss would raise so much money, right?

Also, if the OP's secret had been that they managed to raise the money for an abortion by being really vague about why they needed the money I'd be a shit ton of people would have popped up saying that it's still a lie of omission.

Like a computer problem would raise so much money? Seriously, you could even call it preventative medical care.

It might be a lie of omission, but lesser of two evils, and buyer beware. It's not fraud like this is.

DA

Well, obviously, the computer problem reason did raise a bunch of money

And for the last fucking time this isn't fraud. It was a donation, not a payment for something.

Fraud is fraud. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charity_fraud "Deceitful business acts include businesses accepting donations and not using the money for its intended purposes."

As far as I'm aware, OP is not a business.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's still fraud.

Or if it's so not fraud, provide counter evidence.

all she says in the secret is that she said she needed money for computer stuff and people on her flist gave her some money. It doesn't say she actively solicited donations or undertook to spend the money on that particular thing.

I'm on the OP's side, but technically it was fraud.

I just think that it was the lesser of two evils in this case.
