I wouldn't say that's a "major scene or emotion" like the anon you replied to is talking about. It's not really the length that dictates how complex a story is.

I mean, on the other hand, I've been known to shy away from very long fics, particularly WIPs, because I've come across a fair number of them that lacked a strong plot or sense of direction. That doesn't mean long fics are always pointless, though.

Anything could be pointless, long or short. I thought I was being quite specific while saying "a major scene or emotion" - I didn't refer to a pointless scene at all! Of course something very short is sometimes a pointless scene floating around, but that's hardly the point. A short, even very short fic, could be powerful, poignant and COMPLETE. Pointless scenes do not count in this context. Of course 500 words about a breakfast are more "forgiveable" in a context of a long fic even if they do little to promote the plot than standalone 500 words about breakfast. But then again, that's NOT AT ALL what I was referring to.

As I said, long or short fics can be pointless or bad. That's not the case I'm considering here.
