You are more worried about fandom finding you than RL finding fandom? Why?

(Anonymous) 2012-04-13 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
who says it has to be a comparison? they can be equally bad, op never said one was better than the other

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Well, because honestly it sounds like she expects people from fandom to stalk her, so she is making it difficult for people who IRL may need to contact her to find her.

There's two reasons why that raises my brow: Firstly, that's insulting to fandom, we may be nerds, but we aren't any more creepy and dangerous than people IRL, secondly it's cutting herself off from real life opportunities. If she doesn't want her picture out there, that's fine, but don't blame fandom for it (for that matter she shouldn't be using her name in fandom because employers are notoriously judgmental pricks who have the genuine power to make her life miserable.)

the company would definitely have an offline directory for anybody in-house who needed to reach her, it would be impossible for them not to, and if they're letting her get away with not having it up, she's probably not an important contact point for outsiders

(Anonymous) 2012-04-13 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP but if I were a popular fic writer or fan artist I would not want fandom people able to find my full legal name or workplace on the internet by googling my name or something. I would much rather have my coworkers find my porn fic than have my daily RL location available to the internet at large

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I agree with this! This is why people shouldn't be throwing up their real name in fandom. We all have handles, and we should keep our personal information off of our LJs.

But not because people in fandom would look us up, it's far more likely that people in real life will look the person up and find the fandom activities and thus label them weird or wrong. I mean seriously, would you want your boss or your religious Aunt googling your name and finding your fic or art?

But as for fandom... unless you are a serious wanker, no one is going to stalk you in real life because you wrote a good fic. That's just absurd paranoia.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-14 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Like I said I would much rather have my religious Aunt find my porn than people in fandom finding my religious Aunt. If my boss finds a hobby of mine- hobbies don't disappear from RL because they're on the internet- that she finds distasteful that's one thing, a total stranger finding my real life is another.

It might not be that theyre using their real name in fandom either they mentioned a picture. I'm wondering if its a known cosplayer and I can completely see why one would not want creepers from the internet finding her RL

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
What do you think fandom people would do to your religious aunt?

(Anonymous) 2012-04-14 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
do you honestly not think there are family members and IRL situations that people would not want their fandom friends knowing? maybe you just don't want your fandom friends to find out about your RL. traumas. shitty situations. full of racists and bigots that they'd hate that embarrass you. whatever. you don't know op's circumstances

I see you're completely ignoring the cosplay thing and every other possible example given though and just insisting you're right in whatever scenario because obviously everyone is exactly like you and has your exact priorities so whatevs have fun

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I think you are vastly overestimating how much people in fandom even care about those sorts of things. If it was you being racist and such, that would be one thing. But we all have relatives who we find embarrassing and pasts which we don't feel like sharing, no one is going to go prying.

Not OP obviously, but I think you underestimate how nosey people can be, in and outside fandom.

Not all of them, but if one of them starts looking up your personal stuff online, like it happened to me and to people I know, you might understand.

Then again, I think if OP uses his/her real name in fandom, it's the worst mistake to begin with.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-14 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of people start in fandom when they're super young though and don't realize the importance of keeping their real name separate from their fandom identity. It isn't until they get a bit more age on them and really face potential employment hurdles from fandom activity that the damage control really becomes a priority.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and they really need to learn it quick. The internet never forgets.

[identity profile] armless-phelan.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I had a friend who was a well known writer in a fandom who had someone track down her name and actually called her on the phone. Scary stuff happens.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Good reason not to be sharing your RL name with people in fandom.

[identity profile] armless-phelan.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
She didn't, though. This person tracked down her private LJ account (which has since been closed down) and got her info by reading through all of her posts. And her LJ wasn't linked to her fandom in any way.

[identity profile] raccoons.livejournal.com 2012-04-13 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen people in fandom do some pretty scary things.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen people IRL do pretty scary things, and at much greater frequency. Gah, good fic writers are a dime a dozen. It's very, very rare that anyone will hunt you down in real life because they like your fic. They are far more likely to stalk you on line.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-14 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
But sometimes RL and fandom can intersect in disturbing ways. Like if one of your particularly zealous fans finds out that you live in the same general geographic area based off a casual comment and decides to try to track you down so you can be BFFs in actual physical space together!

Or like when you find out one of your students is a major fan of your sexy fics about certain teenage characters. And you realize that if that student should ever find out your online identity, he/she will have the absolute power to crush you career-wise, even if you're only realistically writing about fictional teenagers relationships and not out having sex yourself with actual teenagers.

[identity profile] raccoons.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I was actually thinking of incidents where there was fandom drama, which carried over to real life harrassment. It doesn't necessarily have to do with whether or not someone is a good fic writers, but whether the person you're talking to online is dangerous. Of course it's just as likely to meet someone dangerous in the real world, but if you're not doing anything illegal, coworkers might find some pictures of you in cosplay and say, "Hey I know that person...wow what a nerd/unique person/normal person with a hobby." A particularly aggressive fanperson who has a grudge against you will do a lot more. I'm sure other people have low-drama fandom lives and friends they can trust, and are more concerned about people at work finding their porn, but OP obviously isn't one of those people and it makes sense.

Personally I just think it's better to keep them completely separate.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I agree about keeping things separate. I think there are lots of reasons not to go giving out your real life name in fandom spaces, the biggest being that if someone, say your employer or some jerk at work who hates you, decides to google your name, you really don't want your fetish porn to show up.

But that's not what the OP is talking about. She's talking about not listing herself in RL directories or allowing her photo to show up as part of her work or schooling because she's afraid that fandom will magically find her through these means. Keeping RL separate from RL is a bit excessive. The chances of being fandom stalked into RL is very, very small. And the chances that keeping your name out of say a school directory will actually stop a determined stalker are even smaller.

[identity profile] raccoons.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
I still think OP's concerns are perfectly legit, and if the directories and photos are optional then I really don't think it matters. Everybody has their own reasons for doing things (and also, not everybody participates in fandom by writing fetish porn. For all we know, that's really low on OP's list of priorities.) To be honest, this is kind of a silly thing to be arguing about and I'm not sure why it matters so much to you.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-14 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
This. velvet mace, just because you've never had an incident in fandom doesn't mean that they don't happen. A small chance is still a chance, and taking precaution is not the end of the world. Really.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-14 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I can't speak for everyone, but I've had stalkers. Also, unwanted mail in the post and people calling my phone.

I didn't even share anything specific (first name, first letter of last name, location but no address, no pictures or even age), but people are scary.
