there's no doubt that scene was disturbing, but imo what's even worse is the constant wrist grabbing and manhandling of the girls, and the fact that it's always romanticized or seen as ~ooh, skinship~~ it's one of the many things that's turned me off of kdramas, tbh

[identity profile] yunho.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
but all girls dream of being manhandled and degraded. it's very romantic.

-_-

it's one of the many things that's turned me off of kdramas

in all seriousness, mte. i lie and tell people i refuse to watch other kdramas because none could ever compare to goong but the truth is im disgusted by korea's portrayal of women in romantic contexts.

[identity profile] ionizable.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
ugh, yes. there are always so many really problematic things happening everywhere in kdramas, from asshole males who get free passes to really clumsy handling of sensitive social issues. i didn't want to complain about them especially since a lot of my friends are still really into them, so i just stopped watching them period. one of my friends even tried to defend it all by chalking it up to cultural differences...... S M H tbh

the asshole males get free passes because they're so GORGEOUS!!11!11 obviously it's okay for a guy to be a dick so long as he's good looking.
at first i complained a lot to people and yeah, i got that same response. "you should respect their culture blah blah it's just cultural differences etc etc." seriously??!!! i bitch to my korean friends about it all the time. one time someone even tried telling me that girls in korea like being portrayed as weak and they like being manhandled because 'unlike in america, women in korea accept that women are weaker than men.'

yeah i almost kicked him the groin, ngl. i'm just sick of how korea portrays women and how they idealize the asshole macho man who gets to grab her and do whatever he wants. and people call americans brutes /smh

It's sadly not even just Korea though. I mean, the story/events hardly changed in the Japanese/Taiwanese/etc versions and this story was so popular all over Asia. I don't know how much they included in this version but in the Japanese manga, Tsukasa throws her to the ground and starts ripping her clothes off, molesting her. And then his actions get the entire school to tie her up to the back of a car and drag her along behind it.
And not to mention all the times he brutally beat up other people for literally no reason. But he's sooo socially stunted and spoiled by his family and lonely!! It's okay for him to act out a bit! And they work well together because they can take their anger out on each other and get into angry fights and misunderstandings every week! It's the most romantic story ever.
I don't watch many dramas any more so I can't really say anything on them now, but I remember being so fucking weirded out by the popularity of Full House, Rain's drama because of how he treated her like a slave and made her cry all the fucking time. And how she just sat there and took it and ~fell in love with him~ and didn't even press charges on her "friends" for selling her house with forged signatures?! What kind of female character IS THAT?!

[identity profile] yunho.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
ugh anon mte. i stopped reading 'romance' teen mangas when i was like in 4th grade because i just got sick of the way people characterized the females. i still remember feeling so enraged while trying to read MARS that i just dropped it halfway thru the second book. and then when i told people i loved sailor moon because serena, while a crybaby, is the one who actually kicks ass and darian is the useless fucktard, my friends had the audacity to say they wished darian was a stronger male and saved sailor moon more. /keysmash of rage/

it isn't just northern asia though. india is still very much like this too (don't even get me started on indian romance films. growing up i wanted to break the tv and even yell at my mother sometimes for liking the shit she called 'romance'). (don't get me wrong, i respect women's choice to be and to like however/whatever they want but somewhere i have to put my foot down and women being sexually harassed, beaten, manhandled, and degraded and then calling that romantic? no.).

again, it all goes back to the fact that in most cases, the male character gets away with it because they're rich and/or hot and/or gorgeous beyond belief and/or popular. it makes me sick, quite frankly.

Tsukasa throws her to the ground and starts ripping her clothes off, molesting her. And then his actions get the entire school to tie her up to the back of a car and drag her along behind it.

I watched Boys over Flowers and Hana Yori Dango and the idea of this happening makes me sick. I always watched it as a guilty pleasure for me, but I must admit I have a hard time rewatching both of the shows because of the amount of abuse the main female character takes.

And thank you SO MUCH for pointing out the same issues I had with Full House! By episode 6, I just dropped the show and couldn't take it anymore. It was just sickening to watch a girl go through all that shit and can still fall in love with a guy who was so clearly abusing her... and her friends were awful! Just awful! I watched that first episode and the idea of being thrown into a foreign country with no place to stay and barely enough funds scares me so much! And she just lets herself be stepped on over and over again! And yet people STILL recommend that K-Drama to me!
