I dunno - if she wasn't a jerk to Jon, she'd be too much of a perfect "Mother" archetype character and she'd be boring.

this is probably true...but just in my own little world i'd prefer her boring.

Yeah, she's really realistically flawed. Yeah, the fact that she was not all warm and fuzzy to Jon and that she said something mean to him that one time she was exhausted and grieving is a flaw, for sure.

But it's just so HUMAN. She keeps Jon at a distance because it's so much easier to project her bitterness onto a person she keeps at arms length than to harbor those feelings for the man who shares her bed and with whom she falls in love. Is it rational? No. But it makes sense.
