Or you know... it's just escapist fantasy? I've never met someone really heavily into any ship that has a great life. So it's always been obvious to me that it's just a form of fantasy to feel better about life in any way they can. Though I guess I've never personally had any conversations with anyone extremely possessive or extreme about their ships and the characters sexuality so maybe I'm coming from this a bit blind.

Escapist fantasy doesn't account for them flying off the handle at other people who don't happen to ship what they do, or not being able to enjoy something unless there's a ship they can latch onto. It's an obsession.

I have. I live with one. It's like they're trying to live their dream life through the characters and the romance, in the same way some possessive and controlling parents try to make their children live the life they wanted. It's creepy.

Hmm that's an interesting point, but that makes me think it's not a mental disorder itself and more a product of a mixture of other ones that have already been explored and understood. I'm sure the person you live with has other things they are rather not normal about? Because like your example of possessive parents, it's really a whole bunch of other things that make them do that...
