There really isn't. Good icons are just such perfect forms for expressing things. You can express fandom love, humor, the theme of what you are posting, or whatever random emotion you are feeling.

Exactly. I think that's really why I've tried to hang on to my Livejournal. I'd keep it anyway, because of all the writing over the years, but all the icons really make the entries/comments come alive.
