From what I hear, that sort of thing is rather common. One of my favorite published authors deliberately based a character on a TV character - and told the actor she was doing it. It probably helped she wrote a couple of episodes for the TV series, but still. The character in her novel's name is a not so clever anagram of the actor's name. Do I love the novel? Oh, yes. It's a lot of fun. Was the actor pleased? From what I hear, he loved her stories - all of it, not just the TV eps she wrote for his series, but most of her (rather large) body of work.
