But 'Marvolo' sounds like a ~sinister, dark wizard, pureblood kind of name. Roddam sounds like ... well, like you said, a real name. It's too basic.

But that's the point! Tom isn't a pure blood. He's ashamed of his family.

Why change his name when he already sounds like a fucking super villain with the marvolo riddle?

I think it would make more sense for him to have a crappy, muggle name, which he resented his parents for and abandoned around the time he killed his father.

But he does have a crappy Muggle name, as far he's concerned. No, he probably didn't hate his middle name quite as much, but the "Tom Riddle" part, which is what most people will call him? He says it in book 2: "You think I was going to use my filthy Muggle father’s name forever?...I, keep the name of a foul, common Muggle, who abandoned me even before I was born, just because he found out his wife was a witch?" He could have had the coolest name in the universe, but if it was one he shared with his father, he'd still hate it just as much.

The "Riddle" part, I think, was probably the worst bit for him, especially once he started school. That's the part that is undeniably Muggle and proclaims to the world that he's not pureblood; "Tom" or "Thomas" isn't really one way or the other, but there are no wizard families (that we know of, of course) named Riddle.

I personally feel like, to him, his middle name probably wasn't much better, especially after he met Morfin. While he never knew Marvolo, Marvolo's name is still a link to his mother and uncle, both of whom were immensely disappointing to him.
