No- Moffat has stated Sherlock is asexual but Cumberbatch has the wrong idea about what asexuality is and what it's caused by.

Like I said, it's unlikely they could portray anything specific and non-typical accurately if they tried

Moffat has stated Sherlock is asexual

No, he's stated Sherlock is celibate, because (paraphrased) "asexuals are boring to write".

Aaaaand another reason to hate the guy. /am an ace

Word. I really, really wish Moffat would stop being involved with shows I like...

/if you can't figure out a way to make asexuals interesting, it's because you're an uncreative hack.

[identity profile] saya22.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I mean, he's dismissive of women and now of asexuals too? Why not be a Muslim hater too Moffat, tick off all my boxes and be done with it.

And yeah, you don't have to slot in sex just to be interesting. If you have no idea how to make a story that focuses on plot and character but have no sex then you're just a knockoff writer.

Did you see the end of SiB? Oh noes, poor White woman being menaced by Ay-rab turrists!

I agree that a story doesn't need sex to be interesting, but I'm saying, you can deal asexuality in ways that are interesting. Hell, I think Sherlock being asexual would make his relationship with John MORE interesting, since they'd have to deal with their different levels of interest in sex. if Sherlock is just "abstaining", then where's the tension? They get together, they start having sex. If Sherlock doesn't want sex, what do they do?

Yes! There are so many excellent fics out there that discusses exactly that, I wish there are mainstream movies/series that dare to tackle this kind of story.

Yeah. (-:

Actually, Moffat thinks asexuality is boring and he says Sherlock is not asexual. It really is Cumberbatch making the claim, far as I can tell.

But I agree with you. If asexual!Sherlock was their intention, they probably still wouldn't get it right.

Actually, I think the show itself has done an ok job with it (yes, even with the Irene stuff in SiB). So I just ignore the interviews and crap (esp. anything Moffat has to say), and just go with what's on the show.

[identity profile] saya22.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, which is weird that Moffat thinks asexuals is BORING because I think they did a good job with making Sherlock seems asexual even with SiB.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I know. Hell, given his reactions to Irene, he seemed more asexual there than anywhere.
