I never liked Toph, actually. I thought she was a self-absorbed brat who should've been called out more often instead of worshipped for being bratty. The hypocrisy of not wanting to be treated differently for being blind yet reminding everyone she was blind with an unfunny joke nearly every episode didn't help.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I just liked that she was a badass fighter. Yeah she was cocky, but seeing as all the other characters had issues it was nice to see someone just get the job done.
(to be fair, a couple people forgot that she was blind- leading to said unfunny joke. There's nothing wrong with her mentioning it- it's true after all. And it's not like she said it out of want for pity. But I can see your point. She was a brat- and Katara actually called her out on it a couple of times. But she still was there to help when push came to shove.)

Sokka is still my baby tho.

The one and only time I remember her getting called out (the episode where she met Iroh out in the woods), the narrative turned right back around and put Katara and Aang in the wrong for doing so. And she tended to offer up unfunny quips even when nobody was talking about or to her. It just got on my nerves after a while, and fandom's unconditional kowtowing was the last straw.

NAYRT
There's an episode in season 3 (The Runaway) in which she gets called out for her behaviour and she and Katara come to an agreement - but Katara wasn't in the wrong.
I love Toph, but I can see why you'd find her annoying.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I may have to hunt that one down, then. I quit after the first 5 episodes of season 3 went absolutely nowhere, so all I really know beyond The Beach is what I've read in scattered random spoilers.

'nother DA.

Go back, please! "The Avatar and the Fire Lord", the episode right after "The Beach", really makes up for the first five episodes going nowhere, and "The Runaway" (the one you'd want to see for Toph getting called out) is the episode directly preceding that. As soon as the solar eclipse happens, the show starts being more direct as far as plot goes, with little in the way of filler. You'll want to finish the series beyond random spoilers, honest.

SA

*preceding = proceeding, sorry.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really. The spoilers I read kind of made me glad I quit when I did. It's like Harry Potter book 7 all over again.

A badass fighter? Like 90% of the cast.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I liked Toph, but it took me a bit of time to like her. For most of the second season I could not get into her. What I don't like is the way that fandom glorifies her to an insane level as OMG SO MUCH MORE BADASS and OMG SO MUCH MORE AMAZING than everyone else. It just reeks of 'this character is superior because they KICK ASS' which is uncool.

And in regards to fandom never calling her out for her behavior, this was especially apparent in how much shit slinging got thrown Katara's way while Toph's behavior was being ignored or even commended.

I think people like Toph because, like Korra, she revels in the power of her bending.

Maybe it doesn't really excuse her bratty nature (although she's not nearly as bratty as her upbringing might have made her) but sometimes in the midst of world-falling-apart angst, the audience wants to grab the television and scream YOU'RE KIDS WITH SUPERPOWERS. ENJOY THEM A LITTLE.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
She's also not the only person who enjoys her abilities and is shown doing so, but okay.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-03 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
god but you're dense

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
For not realizing why, in a series full of TONS OF COMPLETELY AMAZING FEMALE CHARACTERS, Toph is treated as GOD OF ALL by fandom? All right...

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
Except she didn't? She only ever mentioned her blindness when her friends forgot that, hey!! she's BLIND (ex: holding papers in front of her and her saying something "i hear paper, but what am I supposed to be looking at?"). Which goes to show that her friends cared about her enough, as a person and a friend, to NOT make her one handicap a big deal.

She was a brat, yes, and should have been called out more. But hey, she was a 12 year old girl who'd FINALLY gotten out from under her parents restrictive thumb.

I'd be just as loud and bratty as she was.

She also mellowed out some as the series went on. So chill.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
this tbh. Not sure why people are attacking her flaws. Flaws make her a more likable character imo anyway...they give her some depth.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
When they're treated as flaws, sure. According to fandom (and the show to a lesser extent, though I'll have to check out "The Runaway"), Toph doesn't have any. She's Tophgod.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that "Tophgod" stuff is too much. Never did like it, and I have nothing against Toph. Fandom's worship of her is just over the top. It beings to get obnoxious after a while, like when people insert it in a completely off-topic way.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, she did. "I've seen enough of Ba Sing Se, and I can't even see!"

There was at least a quip like that every few episodes. It wasn't funny the first time, and repetition didn't help.

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
No she didn't. I did a rewatch recently and she didn't do that every episode. Yes she had a quip every now and then, but anytime her blindness IS mentioned, is as I said. Usually when she's expected to actually look at something and she's all "Guys? I know you want me to see this, but, uh, I can't."

That also includes the third season, but you've admitted to not seeing all of it. Which is a skewed view on the character, so...no.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
*shrug* Maybe it was fandom's sycophantic worship of her that made it seem that way. At any rate, after all the spoilers I've heard I have no desire whatsoever to even bother with third season so the point is kind of moot.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-03 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair enough, but you should probably reserve complete judgment on a character in a show you didn't finish watching.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-03 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
TBH though she doesn't really develop much at all in the third season. She's by far the least developed of the main cast.
