how is it pretentious? totally agree I'm being silly and over analysing it. that's why it's a secret that it detracts from the book for me

It's pretentious because you think you could do it better than the author of the book.

That's like...a textbook definition of pretentious. "How could she not use a name like one of these! They're obviously so much better lol she made it SO OBVIOUS!"

and you know if I didn't include suggestions, I'd get "well I don't see you comin up with anything better." I feel offering suggestions is the most honest way to criticize

But you're not critically reviewing the book. You're saying a book was ruined for you because you found a plot point (in a children's book) to be incredibly obvious, then decided that you could do it better.

Also, it's incredibly pretentious to say "These suggestions are better because I say so." You might as well say that the name Harry Potter ruined the book for you and that she should have named him Jim Jenkins because it's a better name. Because you say so.

fair enough. I hope you are able to enjoy other stories more easily without being bogged down by the little things you don't like.
