canon canon canon

why do shippers care so much about their ship being canon?

in the end, canon is as ignorable as any other hugely popular story in a fandom.

idk about you, but i have trouble ignoring canon for fanon. canon is too 'this is what really happened sorry' concrete for me. )8

But it's fiction. None of it "really happened".

Because, in this fandom especially, the sides argued over what was canon. It wasn't just "we like Zutara/Kataang, it was "THIS IS WHAT IS HAPPENING, THIS IS HOW THE SHOW IS ENDING."

So when it went the one way when the show ended, that was a big thing. There was much snide trolling and whining butthurt because both sides had huge scores of assholes.

But it's a fictional story told by a specific group of people, and in the fictional world of that story certain things happen and others don't, as decided by that group of people. There's nothing wrong with coming up with ways how things might have gone differently and even preferring your own ending to the real one, but if you don't give a rat's ass about canon because it "didn't really happen", why the hell pay attention to fiction in the first place? That world and those characters didn't really exist anyway, so none of it should matter at all.

Well, it doesn't matter. I don't read/watch/play/whatever fiction because it matters. It's interesting.

Man, my AtLA OTP is older!Toph/Iroh. I can't even wrap my head around caring that much if my ship was canon or not; if I did I'd be in for a world of disappointment (and also people would be totally right to wonder what I was on for even hoping that it might ever become canon, because obviously not).

Sadly, there is not much. :( Everything (all... four) on AO3 for the pairing (http://archiveofourown.org/tags/Iroh*s*Toph/works) is pretty good, and gives you your choice of humor, porn, plotty suspense fic, or what looks like it's gonna be day-in-the-life vignettes though there's only one chapter so far so I could be wrong.

Over at ff.net Slumber My Darling (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6200018/1/Slumber_My_Darling) is more of a platonic love story, and it's lovely but also depressing so don't start with that one if you're after something happy-romantic. And Then They Lived (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3918473/1/And_Then_They_Lived) is hilarious, though it's less about their relationship and more about everyone's reactions to it ("Iroh hummed disapprovingly and shook his head, taking another sip of tea. 'It seems you still do not understand –'" "'I REFUSE TO UNDERSTAND CRADLE ROBBING!' Around the room, small candles flames suddenly flared up to three foot tall torches.")

I'm with you =/
I'm a very vehement non-canon shipper. Yes, my ship isn't canon. That doesn't stop me from writing about their Twoo Wuv, and it doesn't mean I have a war on with canon, and....

Besides, especially when the characters get together at such a late point in the series! You can just AU it a little from before that fact, or say that they tried it and it didn't work out and that's it. Your ship is free to sail.

Canon is sort of the point for me. I enjoy the canon story enough to get involved in the fandom. I'm not crazy about saying my ships ~have~ to be canon, but it's certainly nice.
